What Separates a Prince fan from a Purple Rain Fan?

What Separates a Prince fan from a Purple Rain Fan?

In my opinion, if asked What the best song on Purple rain was a Prince fan may say Computer Blue, while a PR fan would say When Doves Cry or Purple Rain.

That's bullshit. People will mention When Doves Cry or Purple Rain cause those songs just happen to be two of the most amazing songs the guy's ever recorded.

I think the real test would be asking them why Purple Rain was brilliant, and if they say something stupid like it's the album that had #1 hits and awesome guitar, then they're probably not a hardcore fan.

A Prince fan is always trying to differentiate what makes them a "Prince fan" from just a Purple Rain fan.

BTW - I've been a fan of Prince for over 20 years and I love the entire album, and my favorite song on PR **is** "Purple Rain". biggrin

Real simple...

Ask them what Prince's BEST album is and if they answer "Purple Rain" then you KNOW they're just a "PR" fan.

But does the greatness have to do with the popularity? Of course Doves and PR are amazing tunes but Computer blue is equally as amazing.

Wrong.

I think Purple Rain is easily his best album, but I also love Parade, SOTT, 1999, Dirty Mind, etc.

You don't have to think SOTT is his best album ever to be a real Prince fan. So silly.

Sometimes it does, yes. Computer Blue is a fantastic song, but When Doves Cry and Purple Rain are just sheer masterpieces. They did so well on the charts back then cause they're perfectly crafted songs.

I'm noticing that some hardcore fans have this hang up where they don't wanna praise the most popular album their fav artist came out with, cause they think they'll be seen as some sort of "phony" fan.

I'll never understand the idea of how liking one album over another is an accurate barometer of how "hardcore" a fan you are.

I recognize and realize that certain Prince songs are more intricate, or more 'sophisticated' musically or whatever than others, but despite that I personally might like a more 'simple', and *GASP* popular/mainstream song over those other songs. Does that mean I am not as much of a fan or something as someone else? No. Just means I like what I like, even if sometimes what I like is not the more musically sophisticated tune or what the "Prince elite" fans deem 'superior'.

Stop trying to create some weird caste system of Prince fans based on personal likes/dislikes of particular albums or songs.

Ok, well, if that's the case WHAT TRULY SEPERATES a HARDCORE Prince fan from the CASUAL Prince fan? I mean, from what you guys are saying THERE IS NO HARDCORE FAN OR CASUAL FAN -- JUST A "FAN"...right?

Why does identifying the difference matter? How does it affect your personal enjoyment of Prince's music to be separated and/or classified as either a "casual fan" or a "hardcore fan"?

lol

Nope, my answer is it doesn't make a difference what album or song a person might like over another, ust as it doesn't indicate a person's level of fandom. biggrin

For God's sake, a fan is a fan - it's as simple as that. Does it really matter what album somebody's favourite is? Sure, if they ONLY like "Purple Rain" then they're a "Purple Rain" fan, but does it actually matter? Really?

If someone likes Purple Rain but doesnt care too much for Prince then that would be a Purple Rain fan. And I guess if they like other albums or songs then they must be a Prince fan.

Personally I think Purple Rain is THE best Prince album! I love every song and never get tired of listening to it. So call me a Prince fan or a Purple Rain fan, I dont care cause there's nothing wrong with being both!

The best song (in terms of songwriting) on Purple Rain is "Purple Rain" but my personal fav is "Computer Blue."

A "Purple Rain" fan thinks Prince is the Kid and is surprised to know
Prince has *gasp* so many albums.

BTW. Computer Blue is far from the best song on that album!
That honor goes to Baby I'm a Star* biggrin
