The first one I bought with my own money was 'Around the World...' on LP in 1985. "Say Papa, I think I wanna dance!" What a great memory. By the way, anyone know if "Musicology" is on vinyl anywhere?

Prince Greatest Hits as seen on tv. i was in this cheap hotel in Nashville the day after thanksgiving. i will never forget that night. i'd heard Purple Rain before that, but this was the first one i'd ever bought. I got it cuz i'd heard Rasberry Beret on the radio, and i wanted to hear Kiss. Turns out, Gett Off and Cream are my favortie on that album. no. then i got PR, Parade, ATWIAD, Lovesexy, and 1999 on the same day. biggrin

"Purple Rain", on cassette, a day or so after I first heard "When Doves Cry", which was about a week after it was first released as a single here in the UK.

Since then I've bought each one on or around the day of release, all apart from "NPS", which I've still never heard (not too bothered.)

I got 1999 when it came out in 82 (after hearing the title track). Then I went
back and bought his other albums. Then of course a year and a half later,
Purple Rain hit.

Snap

I got 1999 for Christmas -- made me an instant fan, but being only 12 with no allowance, I had to wait for another gift: Purple Rain. Then I started mowing lawns and saving up money -- bought all the previous albums, then every one since then.

"Rave in2 the Joy Fantastic" is a little better IMO, Beautiful Strange and no Winding Road.

I had the 45 of "Uptown" but the first album I bought was "Dirty Mind". The radio was pumping "Head" at the time, which was not available on 45, and I thought it was the funkiest thing I had ever heard.

I bought "Prince" a few months later because I had also loved the songs "I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad", and "Sexy Dancer" on the radio earlier. As I said, I already had the 45 of "Uptown" with "Crazy You" on the B Side and could not understand why this track wasn't on the "Prince" album.....I didn't know that "For You" existed yet.

I bought "Controversy" within the week it was released. During that time, the radio played a "Prince double play" and played "Controversy" followed by "Soft and Wet", which I didn't know existed. The DJ said it was from his first album. I had always assumed that "Prince" was the first album, so I was off to the record store that afternoon to pick up "For You"....I found it in the cut out section. I also was shocked as hell to see the afro. lol

When I bought the 12 Inch of "Let's Work" and heard "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)" on the B Side, I said "NOW what have I missed!".....that was Prince's first non album B Side. lol

Back in Christmas '86 I mentioned to my brother how much I liked Prince's new single "Mountains". That Christmas I opened up my present from him and he'd got me every Prince album up to and including Parade, so they were all my first Prince albums smile. I spent the whole of Christmas day and Boxing day listening to every single album. From that day I was absolutely hooked.

The first one I actually bought myself was Sign 'o The Times. Queued up outside HMV in Oxford Stree, London to get my copy which came with a free Sign 'O The Times T-Shirt!
