My Fave:
Around the World in a Day

My Worst:
Musicology wins hands down!
I thought it was a bad mock up when I saw it online! It's a five minute photoshop job by an amature at best!

In the photo where Prince is laying down holding the CD (before it's release), it's clearly a different design albeit slightly (was it white with yellow/gold type?). What happened to that?

Man there is just no excuse for an artist of his calibre to package his work so badly - NONE!

BTW, I would have loved it if Prince released singles to the Black album, 'When 2 R in Love' and 'Superfunkycalifragisexyremix' each packaged in a black digipack!

THE BEST:

Prince (Airbrushed darker to appeal to the "Black Stations" but we needed that).

Dirty Mind (Raw and Grimy...we needed to see that too:)

Controversy (Prince shows off his latest fashion)

Parade (COsign: Sleek, minimal, sexy)

S.O.T.T.(I give more props to the singles than the actual album. Minus "Hot Thing")

Lovesexy (It's all been said already)

Chaos & DIsorder (An artistic prose on his relationship with Warner Brothers. Sort of an "F You" to Warner. Plus, the album and title are a good reprsentation of the music on the album: Pure garbage)

THE ABSOLUTE WORST:

The Symbol Album

Come

Gold
(I'm so surprised that no one mentioned "Come" or "Gold". Come is dreadful and gloomy. Any pictures of Prince with those greasy pork chop waves on the side of his head are the absolute WORST!)

My favorites:

Around the World in a Day
Sign "O" the Times
Lovesexy
Diamonds and Pearls
Come

The dregs:

For You
Emancipation (the inside is a slight improvement, why not have the Prince in white with the harpoon guitar and globe behind him?)
Crystal Ball (other than the font)
The Vault (too many clashing colors)

I love the colors. I love the clutter, the hodgepodge of musical instruments and neon signs and disembodied cars. A whole bunch of unconnected items that come together to form one solid vision. And Prince is half on, half off, out of focus, as if to say that it is the vision and not the man that is important. The album itself is a hodgepodge of different styles, from rap to rock to whatever the hell Dorothy Parker is but it all comes together beautifully into one unified vision statement. The cover is perfect.

Worst: Chaos and Disorder

The cover, like the album, is a mess. There is a difference between a powerful collage and a bunch of crap thrown together by a rock star at his ultimate spoiled bratness. We get a little bit of Prince's angry eye and the rest is just brutal to look at. As bad as the cover is, the liner notes inside are even uglier. A low point for the man, as he became so obsessed with one upping WB that he forgot about the people whose devotion (and wallets) got him to that position where he could release whatever castoffs he wanted to and wrap it in a godawful spiteful cover.

You are my new hero.

Nope, you'll wrong. Prince took those pictures from a book he published back in 92 called The Saciface Of Victor when the O+> album was released. He put those pictures in the liner notes of COME.

The NPS cover and Musicology are probably the worst. Then there's this:

Good Times.
Any time you meet a payment.
Good Times.
Any time you need a friend.
Good Times.
Any time you're out from under.

Not getting hastled, not getting hustled.
Keepin' your head above water,
Making a wave when you can.

Temporary lay offs.
Good Times.
Easy credit rip offs.
Good Times.
Scratchin' and surviving.
Good Times.
Hangin in a chow line
Good Times.
Ain't we lucky we got 'em
Good Times.
"You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Actually fact-fans, you're wrong too. The Sacrifice of Victor was published in 1994, and the shots taken during the 1993 Act II tour of Europe.

Personally, I think Terry Gydesen's photos are some of the very best photos ever taken of Prince - most are unposed, and just caught off-guard shots. Obviously Prince had a major (if not FINAL) say on what was eventually used, and I would imagine that he had the remaining shots/negatives (of which there were hundreds) destroyed.

What remains are glimpses of a side of Prince many rarely get to see, and in that respect I think she should be applauded for capturing that. As nice as the more recent 'Hawaii' book is, it's a little too 'perfect' for me (although there are a number of great shots I like also)

BEST: Around the World in a Day: the album cover, the songs, the videos, the single covers - a monolithic system.

WORST: Most of his 90s covers, especially Love Symbol. (The 00s are better but Rave is also pretty unmeaning.)

I really liked the cover of the "Letitgo" single. The photography is very sinister and goth. I always meant to get that book at some point.

eek I've always thought that was one of the worst covers.
(his face is so airbrushed he's gone from being black to being orange!)

It's my favorite album cover because Prince looks like a total rebel in that pic. He's got that whole "New Wave" thing going on,with the heavy eyeliner and that infamous "stare".I also like the newspaper headlines in back of him, which gives the impression that this is his BIG POLITICAL STATEMENT.I think it's a provocative album cover that mirrors the music contained within.

Yeah, that's the photo I love, although it printed darker on the actual "Letitgo" single which added to the sinister feel. I have to find that book one day.

I don't think that Prince made this but a guy at the WB backlot. The covers of this era quite well reflect the mood of Prince.
