Ok, who dumped who? Between the differing accounts in the books "DanceMusicSexRomance" and "Possessed", it seems that there is a little bit of dispute over whether or not Vanity left Prince or he finally got tired of her cocaine-sniffing ass.
Both books cite how explosive the relationship had become as well as Prince's refusal to be faithful to just Vanity. The one thing that I had not heard until I read "Possessed" is that it is reported tha Vanity had an affair with Albert Magnoli (Director of "Purple Rain") and Prince promptly dumped her from both the movie as well as his life as soon as he found out. What's the scoop? Is "Possessed" full of crap? | |

About Prince's faithfulness during this (or any!) period - He had many 'conquests' - Vanity has been sighted as his main muse in this period, but she was not his main girlfriend, that title went to Susan Moonsie.
'When Doves Cry' was reportedly written about their break-up - a more honourary break-up song I could not imagine. About Possessed - It's salacious and has a tabloid angle to it, which I enjoy, but it is based in fact, or at least factual accounts of those close at hand - much of the author's research was taken from the research of Per Nilsen and the Uptown teams work on DMSR and Days Of Wild (nay, The Vault) - since he was their lawyer in their case against Prince (which you could say accounts for the critical overtones in the book against Prince). Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased...... | |

I thought that Susan Moonsie withdrew romantically from Prince because she would not play the role of the "understanding" girlfriend when it came to his screwing around. This kinda left Vanity free reign until he turned to Jill Jones and whomever else for his sexual needs. Vanity in turn dived into drinking and drugs to numb her personal demons. So did Vanity get booted or did she seek greener pastures on her own? | |

My thoughts exactly but that's what is reported in "Possessed" (hence my question, is the book full of crap?) | |

Going by what was written it seems what went down is that Prince got tired of Vanity trying 2 be controlling of him when it came 2 other women and started distancing himself from her but not completely dumping her in which she may have saught revenge by fooling around with Magnoli which finally pissed Prince off and ended the relationship completely. | |

I have Posessed but have yet to give it a read through. | |

Maybe that's why he (Magnoli) was really crying in the 25th anniversary DVD | |

Maybe that's why he (Magnoli) was really crying in the 25th anniversary DVD I have to review that again. I have ghardly viewed the extras to date. I would think that if it were true, Prince would have been quite difficult to direct. But by all reports he was a hardworker. Why wouldn't he trip on Magnoli? | |

As they often say in these kind of situations, "Don't hate the playa... hate the game." I guess from what I read, the women in Prince's life were not "allowed" to play around despite Prince's own behavior. This is why Vanity sought to hurt Prince via an affair with Magnoli. | |

I'm not saying anyone was in the right or wrong. Im going by Princes' temperament. I would think that Prince would be pretty peeved if hs director had a thing with his gal, even ex-gal. | |

Yeah, I can agree with your thoughts on this. Unfortunately Prince's feelings toward Magnoli after the affair are not discussed/detailed in the book. | |

Yeah, I'm still tripping over the image of Morris and Vanity getting high together I guess the life of a protege back in the 80's required a little bit of numbing here and there | |

... NO POINT The "Magnoli" claim trips me out, pure and simple. My curiousity is fueled by my disbelief that Vanity would walk away from the fame that "Purple Rain" (the movie) generated for everyone involved. Yes, she may have had a love-hate relationship with Prince but to walk away from the female lead in a major motion picture??? | |

Vanity left. She left Prince and the 'Purple Rain' movie only three weeks before filming began. | |

Who next? Jill Jones and Big Chick Huntsberry??? | |

Vanity left Prince weeks before the filming of Purple Rain began in September 1983. She was jealous of Prince with other women: Susan Moosie, Jill Jones and Susannah Melvoin, who he just met in August 1983 at Wendy's debut at First Avenue.

Yes No, Possessed said Other reports indicated she was fired. Possessed gives all sides. With interviews by Alan Leeds, Matt Fink, Dez, Mark Brown, Jellybean Johnson, Bobby Z, Susan Rogers and many others Possessed is not full of crap. Also Alex Hahn had help from Per Nilsen. Goodnight, sweet Prince. | |

----- Maybe he really did not care about her that much or perhaps he could not get rid of the director. This was about 3 weeks before the movie started shooting. | |
