Purple Rain was just the frosting on the cake. This is one of the major reasons I got into P in the first place. Because he had this Hendrix thing visually, he just updated it, that's all. Also, Hendrix was a good looking guy IMO, but Prince is just naturally prettier.  Prince is from the glam 80s, Hendrix is from the hippy 60s, but Hendrix wore the same kind of clothing. Also Prince just looks like Hendrix.
