In this day and age, Prince IS old-school so it's kinda senseless to look for him for innovation and ground-breaking material. I'm not waiting for anything. I'm merely mentioning what I'd prefer that isn't too unrealistic for him right now (I'm not asking that he stop being a JW and whatnot). And Dansa, his influences have always been prevalent, but almost never derivative like now. Stuff like the song Musicology is the kind of JB knockoff just about any Prince (or JB) wannabe could record, for example. [Edited 4/19/05 17:31pm] I can understand fully what you are saying. It's like deja vu hearing people nowadays talking about Prince sounding more and more like his influences and less and less like an original artist with a signature sound. A lot of the old fans like me said the same thing beginning with "Around The World In A Day" when he started sounding like The Beatles and albums following it when he started sounding more and more like James Brown. I understand exactly what you are saying but it's been going on since 1985, it's nothing new that he's recently started doing. Andy is a four letter word.

Let the new schoolers come up with the innovation and groundbreaking music. Prince is old-school now and I don't see the shame in representing that. I agree. If what the new artists are doing is what's considered groundbreaking these days, then I'll take Prince and his "James Brown" sounding music any day over it. Andy is a four letter word.

I think that's the reason I can't really get into Musicology. Songs like Dear Mr. Man and Musicology are too clearly derivative. Prince is a musical genius, he can do so much better than this. In his old music, even in those maligned 90's, he always had influences like anyone else, but he always added his own touch and made it new. Please Prince, no more "old school joints" that sound like watered down 70's retro funk; let's be Prince and experiment again. Wait minute, I have always felt Prince music has been reminiscent of past Funk and Soul.Hell, its no secret that Prince has been influnenced by JB, and Sly. My only problem with P album this time around was the overusuage of horns and mushy love songs . [Edited 4/19/05 20:34pm] Hotlegs, you beat me to it. Andy is a four letter word.

All the "Monday morning quarterbacks" need to pick up an instrument or a drawing pencil (ya know, the ones that come with the kneeded erasers. I frickin' love those htings!) and make their own art. Trust me, it's a lot more fulfilling than pining away for someone else to entertain you.

I still think that Purple Night does have a point. Ok his influences in the past may have been obvious, but the music was always easily identifiable as Prince. I personally HATE it when he slips into pastiche (Pretty Man, The Work Pt1, Musicology) - even when I like the songs! It just seems just too derivative. Prince said one time that he prided himself on originality - nothing new in those songs. Having said that I think that he is still producing work which is pretty 'Prince like' and innovative - witness the Rainbow children. But his temptations to impersonate are stronger than in the past [Edited 4/23/05 6:18am]

The only problem with Prince is the expectations of the fans. I have NO expectations of dude. If he wants to do a gospel revival tour and release bluegrass CDs; fine by me. I won't be buying it, but its his right. I got the good stuff and I was around during the heyday. I've got no real complaints. If I get nostalgic for the old days; there's plenty of "reference material" (b**tl*gs) to revisit as well as commercial releases. Dude has to be one of the most fortunate artists of all time in that a great deal of what he has done has been recorded. Not many artists have as much of their performances, concerts and mateiral in circulation amongst fans as Prince. Waiting around for him to "come back" and lead some sort of resurgance of MN funk rock is a waste of time. Its a different music industry with different technology and a whole new set of people in control. Labels consider the megastars of the 80s (like Prince, MJ, Madonna) mistakes in that those artists had far too much uncontrolled airtime and too much say so in the direction of their careers. The next time we see an artist with that much control over his/her music will be here online and not through the mass media. Most of the megastars eventually come to blows with their labels. At this point, the best thing to do is enjoy what Prince has already released, accept what he releases nowadays (or not) and move along quietly. Better yet, how's this for an idea - LOOK FOR NEW MUSIC FROM NEW ARTISTS!

I agree but it's always fun to bitch and complain. Better yet, how's this for an idea - LOOK FOR NEW MUSIC FROM NEW ARTISTS!
That's an excellent idea. Only one problem though, there is no good new music from new artists. Instead, I get more into more old music from older artists. [Edited 4/23/05 8:58am] Andy is a four letter word.

[Edited 4/23/05 6:18am] Exactly. Even though I didn't particularly love TRC, I liked that he was (for the most part) being Prince again, in the sense that he was creating a more original sound again on an album. Now I definitely prefer a more pop oriented album than jazz of any kind, but Musicology is still a huge step back in terms of Prince not sleep walking through an album by just lifting directly from his old self and his idols. As for ppl saying I should just accept Prince and move on, that's just silly. I do accept the guy as he is, and I listen to other artists, but that still doesn't mean I can't have an opinion on what I think Prince could work on right now. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Mmmhmm, that bothers me too. That's part of what this thread is about. He borrows from his own prime years too much now too. It's all just recycled. C'mon Prince, you're too brilliant to rest on your laurels like this. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"
