my list of worst guitar solos is:

1) fly away(live version from rave 2000 p2p dvd)-absolutley the worst ,
no melody no structure ,it's very anticlimax, nothing.

2)automatic-very sloppy i don't sound like prince

3) purple rain (live rave 2000 dvd)-probably the worst version of purple rain)

4) loose(he could have done much better then play
old chuck berry riff over and over again).

5)come on(where are the good licks)?

this is my list for now.i also must admitt that i haven't heard bad guitar solo by prince since 2001.

He's obviously a great guitarist, but on the one occasion when I did get to see him play live (Wembley Arena, UK, circa 1998, I think), his improvised solos were very uninspired. Just noodling with no real spark at all. I was quite surprised - I expected to be blown away but I wasn't.

Was it the Jam of the Year tour?

That totally sucked. barf

I think so...on the back of the shite New Power Soul album disbelief The drummer he had at the time was rubbish too - coming in between Michael Bland and John Blackwell too...tsk!

When he played The One, I swear the whole arena collectively fell asleep.

Quite an underwhelming intro to the world of Prince concerts.

...AND we ran out of Golden Drummers! Mum....it's good to be 'ome..

Silly me, I should be happy to spend a small fortune to go and see an experienced, lauded, professional musician on the assumption that he may not be very good after all...disbelief

yup, i was pissed too. nod it was a shite concert. shrug

Every single other one of his i've been too has been excellent, but this one sucked (Let's work perhaps the only redeeming performance).

He just wasn't on form / interested / interesting / whatever.

I have seen a few artists/ bands where this has been the case..I have seen one band in particular (naming no names) 9 times, of which some have been amazing, some quite good, some average and some useless neutral
Prince, on the other hand, is one person I thought I could really expect to be on form every time.

To be fair, it wasn't all bad news, and I still came away glad to have seen him perform and all that, but still.....

i think li'l fella was going through a bad patch at the time.

A lot of the music was really sub-standard for him. He looked terribly ill and gaunt. He'd lost his child in tragic circumstances.

I dunno. It just wasn't happening. He was a totally different guy when he came back and played the One Nite Alone Tour. smile

"The Question Of U" is pretty bad and annoying!
Kind of hate all the slick and slow guitar solos ...

There's only one good advice to Prince: KEEP ON JAMMIN' ON THE HOHNER,
and leave the childisch, ugly shaped, slick guitars at home!
Get Dez back into the band to play those nasty solos, so you can focus on the funky riffs

Orgasm is a deliberately bad guitar solo , apart from that I honestly cant think of another one that springs to mind confused .I was never too impressed with the live version of "The One " also that someone already said.

I think some of his live soloing pre-Purple Rain wasn't all that (did he even play any solos on the Controversy/1999 tours). I don't know which one it was, NYC 1980 or The Ritz 1980, but he messes up a little there.
But I find his playing generaly pretty impressive.

... a thoguht just crossed my mind, and I'll propably be banned forever for saying this, but I don't think the Undertaker performance is all that. I mean, Bambi sounds great but that's mainly due to the rhythm section. I think he did that one much better. The Ride aswell.

The guitar solo of 'Orgasm' is a sample of the ending of 'Private Joy' from the album 'Controversy' and it kicks ass! cool

you ask if prince played guitar live in the early live shows?
of course he did .not only did he play lead guitar,
he played guitar in almost every song in 1980-early 1982 time period.
i heard new york and ritz 1981 and both are great.
great guitar playing.
in that early period he played better guitar then in some latter periods.
maybe the reaSON was because in the beging he played all the time.

Prince's non-funk songs are no better than any other great songs ...
Prince's FUNK had no competition in the 80's!!!
