Love this album also.

Great, great guitar sound and in the main live bass and drums!

It's my understanding that Prince has since said this album was mere filler to get out of the WB contract but if thats true..

1. then why did he re-record some of the material prior to release in early 1996
2. and as already stated why shoot videos for Dinner, I like it there, Same December and then promote Dinner and Zannalee on US TV?

It was the lack of promotion by WB that again thwarted its sales, albeit it wouldn't have been a smash hit, and once Prince released this he gave up on the project and moved on.

It's easy to look back with hindsight at certain "failed" projects from this era and say "well my heart wasn't in it".

Uh...it's called a CONTRACT, people. It was either honor the terms under the contract, which normally includes junketts and videos to promote the album, or face legal action from the Warner Plantation.

But only Dinner with Delores was ever released. I like it there has only ever been shown/issued via npgmc so I imagine Prince mever gave this video to WB which negates your argument.

NO videos were made for The Vault or Come, nor I believe were there any promotional efforts by Prince.

Both of these albums were also said to be contract filler.

In addition Come and The Vault are by Prince whereas C&D by prince which makes me think he wanted to be associated with it at the time of release.

All this leads me to believe that Prince wanted to make C&D and release it and was pleased to put his new name to it.

No, it doesn't negate my argument because we don't know exactly WHAT kinda deal they either had or came to in the midst of the messy-ass breakup.

Same goes for The Vault & Come...we don't know what the deal was...and The Vault was released AFTER P left Warner.

And if Prince wanted to release C&D so much...why the disclaimer on the insert?

Because the same was said of Dirty Mind.

Yes I know what it said. What I'm saying is that the legend is famous about how Prince submitted the demos (only intended for private use) of Dirty Mind and was told "This should be your next album."

I think Prince was referencing that when he included that "disclaimer" on C&D.

Just last year Prince put the video to I Like it There on his web site. Do you really think he was trying to remind us of the shitty contractual-obligation-not-meant-for-listening stuff he did in 1996, or do you think he thought the song is hot?

Co-sign that! nod

It is by no means a "classic" but I love the rock feel of the album.

I didn't listen to it when I first got it but then I mixed the tracks in on an
"exercise CD" compilation and wow! was I ever surprised at what I had been missing! biggrin

I think he really did just throw "C&D" together to end the contract, and NOT the way you believe he referenced it as he did for "DM."

Also, I never said HE hated ALL of the material, him releasing the video now could mean he's washed his hands of the hatred for WB for the most part or he may like the cut itself.

I doubt he hated any of it. I bet he even thinks Poom Poom & Graffiti Bridge are brilliant.

I think the motivation for the disclaimer was to taunt WB by making them think that if the new demos were this good, imagine what they would be missing out on with the real stuff.

Don't get me wrong. I like the album, but I don't think it's as good as Dirty Mind or Emancipation. I just don't think the disclaimer meant fans should not bother listening to it.

Actually, I sort of agree with you on that part. He was hyping Emancipation at the time. He's always hinting at something even better down the road, like The Dawn, which hasn't happened.

I take your points but I still feel the evidence lends itself to my point of view - that Prince did rate the work on C&D dispite any protests later.

Because of:

The use of the name prince with C&D

The fact that videos were fimed for this album and not Come or The Vault, namely Dinner with Delores, I like it there and additional work in 1996 on the Same December.

And as we don't know the outcome of any amednments re the WB contract we cannot assume that WB didn't contractually require videos to accompany The Vault, however unlikely, as there were no single releases from this album.

The disclaimer, as Andyman91, states could be either a nod to Dirty mind or to spite WB - taunting them he had better material in the locker - which I don't think he did if Emancipation is anything to go by.

Anyway just my 2 cents.

He used prince because he was no longer addressing himself as Prince at that point, so there's the answer to that.

The Vault was released AFTER he left WB and that was probably what was left in the WB vaults, they owned the songs, they released them, simple as that. Prince more than likely had absolutely nothing to do with that project.

Except that he changed his name on the 7 June 1993 and Come wasn't released until August 1994. Glam Slam Ulysses and the original Undertaker video were both before this and were prince projects - although The Undertaker was released as Prince for some unknown reason.I can say with certainty that Prince liked The Undertaker tracks so that name change was strange - any thoughts?

As for The Vault - ur probably right - Prince had no involvement and WB were probably taking a swipe at him by using the name Prince - although by that point the prince name had been "changed" to "the artist" and Prince had all but dropped off the map.
