Okay, so how many instruments can he play again?

Was it 20+ or 30+? And does anybody know the exact number?

Anything except for the live horn section.

Any yes, THAT is a serious answer. Prince never learn to play horns himself.

Basically he plays each of the staple instruments of rock/r&b: guitar, bass guitar, drums & percussion, piano and other keyboards. He played saxophone when he was in junior high but gave it up. Eric leeds said in an interview that prince can't play saxophone and there's no recording evidence of him playing that or any other horns. He also doesn't play orchestral strings. I think he's played harmonica at one point but wasn't very good and the general belief is that he can't play wind instruments.

On promomaterial spread to give him a recordcontract in the late seventies it was stated he did play 27 instruments!

I think, at first, they counted all 'keyinstruments' (piano, organ, synth, mellotron(?)) seperately to reach that high humber.

Is it true that Prince plays harp by the way? I mean, i hear that instrument on differert tracks, especially on Adore. But in the liner notes for that songs it is not stated the Harp is played by another musician, so, yeah, i think its Prince.

From 'Musician'
Article publication date: April, 1997:

Was that a real or a sampled harp on "Soul Sanctuary"?

That was a sampled harp. I wanted to be able to play it perfectly, and while I can play a few simple things on a real harp, the sample helped me get it the way I wanted it. Samples are good for music; you almost can't compare "It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night," the uptempo song from Sign o' the Times, with "The Human Body" [from Emancipation] because of the difference that samples make.

I've read the list of instruments prince is credited on his first album and yes, they're counting every different keyboard instrument used a separate instrument.
