Why Wasted Kisses is one of the most brilliant songs by Prince in the last decade.

A while back I made a thread complaining about the background sound effects in this song. I thought then that they were unnecessary clutter.

I was totally wrong!

This song is utter genius.

The way those background effects tell the story of his relationship with Mayte disintegrating is absolute art.

The siren could easily be an ambulance siren, like Mayte being rushed to the hospital, which is then followed in the song by a man screaming (Prince screaming out in pain), and then ends with a heart rate monitor flatlining (the baby having to be pulled off life support, and Prince and Mayte's relationship dying with it).

All this set to wonderfully cold music as Prince cynically sings "Why did I waste my kisses on you now?"

It's a brilliant gem. I thought it was flawed before, but now I see it's actually a masterpiece.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

"You still wanna take me to prison...just because I won't trade humanity for patriotism."

Sorry, but in my opinion it's one of the most overated songs.

A bit like filler.

Although the song is undoubtedly a metaphor for the end of a relationship, I can't agree with you that he has referenced the death of his child for this end. Think about it, that would be quite sick and distasteful and Prince just isn't that cynical.

It's generally believed the song is about a psychotic guy killing a woman, the ambulance arrives bringing medics who knock on the door, discover the murder and the flat-lining is the woman dying as they try and save her. There's a few clues to this in the lyrics, 'small dark room - that's where I let u smother' and 'those burgundy stockings/The ones I tied u up with' although those lyrics could be interpreted in other ways too.

I must admit, I don't understand the line 'gut, tell another' in the lyric: 'Small dark room – that's where I let U smother/
In front of your gut, tell another' Any ideas?

Unless he has cut open her guts, which is again, pretty sick.

that's interesting, metalorange - i wouldn't instantly dismiss the idea about Prince's child.

the song feels like an outlet, and it's not unreasonable to make a connection between the life-support machine sound at the end and prince's screams and the loss he felt at the time. i also don't think that would be distasteful.

Isn´t that line about " ...your gun totin´ (an)other ..." ???

Unless he has cut open her guts, which is again, pretty sick.

Well, I got the lyrics from the dtt transcription team, but that doesn't mean it's correct. I've played that line over and over, but I still can't make it out. Even if it was 'gun totin 'other' that still doesn't make sense in conjunction with the rest of the lyrics, neither does 'ghetto mother' really.

My point is, you can infer whatever you want from the sound effects - but if they lyrics don't support your story, and it seems none of us even know the lyrics for sure, you're on pretty thin ice. You can't go, oh well, I'm going to ignore that lyric because it doesn't fit in with my theory - it's all got to work together consistently.

I think it is over-rated, I mean there's a large slice of fans who don't rate any of NPS, other than say the usual tracks (this, Come On and The One) - so maybe it just looks so great stood next to the rest of the LP - If I ever listen to NPS (which I do), I end it at (Eye Like) Funky Music.

It WAS nice to hear Prince record something dark and melancholy again though, it's not a bad song, and certainly an interesting track, from an otherwise uninspiring era.

I like it when Prince gives us something a little leftfield - his current child-friendly drippyness makes me vomit.
Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......
