Dude, "Lemon Crush" is just as bad as all the songs you named.

No friggin way. disbelief

"Lemon Crush" is just gawd-awful! Seriously, its a huge friggin' turd! I remember being shocked that Prince had produced such a shitty song back then. Later, he'd do albums like NPS that were filled with this kind of manure, but back in the 80s it was shocking to me. Batman is stunningly mediocre, and proof that not every album he produced in the 80s was stellar.

Prince did record Batman in a very short timespan (6 weeks i think), all by his own, using guitar, horn, orchestra and choirsamples to fill in the basictracks he recorded.... it is no Lovesexy, but its a record that perfectly suits the movie, and also suits the thoughts going on inside Prince's own Gemini-mind

That latter (dark, deep) aspects of this cd give this cd a depth that every Prince-cd from then on lacked. I mean, when you want to hear the REAL Prince, listen to everything he released from Around the World in a Day unto Lovesexy, and consider Batman as a nice dessert....

From then on the playing might get better, the mastery of studiotricks more convinced, the arrangements more ballanced....But for me, good music in the first place means soul and magic... and not necessarily technical skills and showing off with arrangements....in that sense Batman is the last great 'classic' Prince record...

I mean.....The Gold Experience shows skillfull musicianship, Emancipation shows his 'knowledge' about different styles of music, Musicology shows a businessman making a lot of money based on a calculated, mediocre record.

So...Soul, spirit, magic...knock, knock.....Prince, where are you?????

Just listened to this one recently, and it's really not as bad as I remembered it.

Now I just think it's so-so.

I just added this CD to my Prince collection. I was excited b/c I remembered thinking Arms of Orion was a cool song, but after a few listens I can't bear the sappiness and skip it. After all the hype Partyman gets on the org, I thought it would be killer. I like it, but it's too short...
The Future is tight. cool
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I still love the Batman soundtrack , 1st album of his I ever heard .
Seems to me anyone who was introduced to Prince via this album loves it
(obviously , cos we wouldnt necesarily still be fans otherwise) , but a lot
of you who were already Prince fans in the mid-80s werent impressed and think its weak (by comparison to his other 80s albums ), a fair comment?
Are there many of you out there who were Prince fans way before the Batman album came out and love/like it a lot , ie I think Vainandy fits into this category ?

Because they are too silly to realize that the music fits the film perfectly.
He did a really good job with that project. Look at all the subsquent Batman films and soundtracks. They suck (LoL)

The single contained remixes of The Future and Electric Chair and has a neat album cover.

Batman was truly underrated, despite the sales.

Prince was on fire during this time, so anyone who says this was weak or uninspired, doesn't appreciate the minimalist (and sometimes dense) rythyms that represented some of Prince's baddest and tightest drum programming. I think he must have gotten into some new sounds, via drum sounds and the newer Roland keyboards at that time.

Sure I have to skip Arms Of Orion, but it's worth it when you consider The Future (a futuristic 'mature' version of Controversy), Electric Chair, Partyman, Batdance, Trust (insane drum programming), and Lemon Crush.

Rudeboynpg says, "That's right. Batman was a return to Prince's earlier synthesizer and drum machine sound of 1999. No horns. It's atmospheric, hypnotic and raw." That sums it up. Batman and Grafitti Bridge, to a certain extent were the last albums with "true" Prince rythym tracks. I think a few forms of Electronica owe a lot to Prince. Even Drum n Bass, with it's 180 bpm tempos, and seemingly frenetic drum programming can't touch what Prince was doing on the Batman album... Then again, most Drum n Bass is simply based on sped up loops of older Hip-Hop grooves and breaks pasted together.

Between the tight-ass programming, the darker sounds and feel of the album, and the intentional minimalism, Batman is an important album that would have much more respect if it weren't "Batman", a "soundtrack", and maybe if it were called "The Future"... It would have been called "visionary minimalist brilliance"...

Peace.

What I don't understand is why Batdance, a #1 single, was left off The Hits 1/2. Some artists are like that with soundtrack songs, I guess. Madonna left Who's That Girl of The Immaculate Collection.

I forgot 2 mention how "Trust" has that "Baby I'm a Star" kinda feel 2 it... and the funk rythym guitar is bangin'.

nod I couldn't agree with you more. Alot of the cuts on this album are timeless. Actually, I still jam them still especially the cuts you mention above which some Prince's best song's in his catalogue rather some people want to admit it or not.

I really like Batman a lot but I think it's right where it is. It was perfect for the time it came out especially with all the hype around Batman and the man needed a hit album after Lovesexy bombed so it was a perfect case of great timing. I like all the songs on Batman and I don't mind Arms Of Orion that much though, I hit the skip button with that song most of the time. I do wish that The Future was a single in the states and if it was, it should have had a kick ass video with it. That or Electric Chair.
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

OK, finally got it today in the mail. After the first spin, I can say that I like it. Some of the lyrics are silly, but this is the soundtrack for the biggest blockbuster of 89. Interesting themes and good ideas abound. Scandalous takes the cake as the best song on there, but most of the others are pretty neat also. Partyman was funny and The Future was neat. Batdance was the real bummer, tho. I seem to remember liking it when I was in Kindergarten, but now it just sounds very unlistenable. Again, interesting ideas here, but this time it doesn't work for me. I like when it "Stop!"s, lol.Arms of Orion, tho I liked it, seems a bit generic, and Lemon Crush is a bit less than mediocre. But it is what it is and Prince accomplished exactly what he wanted with the style that he wanted. And overall, I think it was what I expected it to be. Not an especially great Prince CD, but a CD of his that shows other sides of his talent and has some nice tunes on it.

Bye the way, they were chanting "Rave un2 the Joy Fantastic" in one of the 2 versions of the Batdance video. Did the original version of Rave sound kinda like that?

i got batman in 89 on tape after seeing the filmclip as well..this was my 2nd intro to prince (as we all grew up listening to purple rain!!) but as i was just a wee lad in 84 it didnt really leave much of an impact..i loved batman s/track since day 1 but it wasnt till late 2003 i really got in2 him hard and heard the batman album in a different light.

it remains one of my fave albums of all time ,
..arms of orion is really the only track i might occasionally skip but the album as a whole..MASTERPIECE OF SONICS!!!

im sure this will be argued heatedly but i love it more than DIAMONDS N PEARLS n LOVE SEXY
