That's right. Batman was a return to Prince's earlier synthesizer and drum machine sound of 1999. No horns. It's atmospheric, hypnotic and raw.

I like "The Arms Of Orion" boxed

I like every song on 'Batman' but I have to admit, the song "Lemon Crush" doesn't really fit.It sounds out of place and it's the only song that doesn't really fit the theme of the album.Perhaps he should have replaced it with either "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic" or "Dance With The Devil"?

"Lemon Crush" could have been a B-side,or placed on a future album.

"Lemon Crush" is definately the weakest track on the album. The groove is a rip off of one of the songs on the "Minneapolis Genius" album.

As for "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic", that would have been a perfect replacement. It's the only track I like on the "Rave" album and doesn't fit in well with that album at all. It would have been absolutely perfect on "Batman".

I think "Lemon Crush" is a cool song....great hook/chorus,and it's really funky. But it doesn't fit on the album. It's supposed to be by Vicki Vale, but it's hard to imagine her thinking those thoughts ("If I'm working....at my jobba....I'm the victim....you're the robba").On the 'Batman' album,it feels like filler. But if it were placed on a normal Prince album,it would make more sense.

I like the track also, it's just my least favorite from the album. I think it would have worked better as a B Side from another album.

"The Future" is a banger. Fantastic song, and his words are fantastic. Even if they may have been written quickly or whatever, its a cool song.

Agreed.I'm surprised it wasn't released as a single. It's the strongest song on the album imo.

soon as the character in the movie says "WHAT ARE U?" and that thumpin bass drum comes in ,,and l8r on in the song his very minimal but effective funk guitar hooks.AAARRRGHH 2 FUCKIN GOOD!!!

if a man is considered guilty by what goes on in his mind .then give me the electic chair for all my future crimes -OH!!

the funk and jimi hendrix esque riffs of the electric chair are spine tingling

i could never hate on this album with songs like this

i love how the songs are based on the movies characters ,,

in the late 80s i was a huge batman fan ive got several hundred comix of batman alone (detective comix etc) this album was the soundtrack to my initial obsession..

off the track but does any1 out there remember the early 90s storyline where batman has all his enemies released from arkham aslylum and bane eventually breaks his back...

of course dc comix dont compare to marvel, but thats a thread for a differnet forum l8rz!!!

U know...I am gonna admit something here...I put on my phones last night and listened 2 1999 and Batman back 2 back
and there is a nice flow....Sure 1999 is BETTER...but they have a nice feel 2gether..

Batman moves up my ladder a bit.....

By the way, Evil white male, what do you stand for:
- the evil white male taking peeps from africa and transported them to america as slaves?
- some provocative nick, and nothing more? (nickelodeon-addict?)
- some positive, constructive fellow?

I am curious, what do you stand for?

Don't agree with that at all. I enjoy the album but it was in fact the first new album I heard that wasn't great and didn't show any progression. Speaking personally of course, there isn't one great song on there, just a few good ones.

I don't think it's underrated. While in retrospect, it's a more solid and cohesive effort than a lot of the albums that came later, it was the first Prince album that felt derivative of his earlier music in a way that screamed "rethread". ATWIAD was derivative of Purple Rain, but it was gracefully and imaginatively so, but Batman echoes songs like 1999 and Baby I'm a Star in a way that is relatively unimaginative for him (Partyman and Trust).

It was also his first naked attempt at regaining some commercial clout since Dirty Mind. Since DM's release, all Prince records had been personal and gutsy for different reasons, either because of their lyrics, length, genre bending or overall artistic ambition. They all had a "be damned" attitude. Batman seems more conceived to please the audience than the artist. Including songs like Arms of Orion and so obviously modeling some songs after his back catalog made this one of Prince's most commercial releases.

That said, the album does have several good songs -- just too many holes in it to make it great.

This is a great album to work out to, with the exception of Arms of orion. The Future is a great intro as well. Underrated? Completely.

This is such a great album! I bought it for Partyman then I fell in love with every song. Even though Arms of Orion is a little to corny for me..I still love it! thumbs up!
