"Scandalous" -- Nuff said. Pussy-gettin' jams are ALWAYS gonna rank high on this Prince fan's list!
But "Chaos and Disorder" ...That album? It sounds EXACTLY LIKE THE TITLE! LMAO! THAT album should be shot, shitted on and shelved! Desire, it covers our faces

Arms of Orion is beautiful! I don't understand why Prince fans always diss, not necessarily the album, but this song (often along with Lemon Crush, which is another favourite). Sure, it's not street-cool or serious or raw, but it's lyrically beautiful, sounds harmonic and Princes and Sheenas voices sound really pure and clear, like ice-cold spring water on hot summer skin.
WHY can't he be allowed to do a pure ballad, like Arms Of Orion or Diamonds and Pearls without everyone jumping on the walls here? -S-

Batman was a breath of fresh air.
It was the first record a few few years that took Prince back to a more polished and solid sound. At that time period, although his music was good, it was always littered with too many sounds and sometimes sounded extremely messy. It did great on the charts too...it was his last great record.

Considering that the several albums leading up to it are Parade, Sign O The Times, "The Black Album" and Lovesexy, I cannot see how a sub-par disc like Batman could be considered a "breath of fresh air" after those brilliant, far superior works Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. I understand what U are saying here... After Lovesexy-one of his best off course- this was an album U could play in presence of non-Prince fans without them complaining about"what's that noise??". Some off them even compaired it with PR,the polished sound,NOT the quality of the songs. It was indeed the Prince sound that was expected at that time. Not so intressting 4 the fans but just a great"mainstream"Prince album. Indeed, his last album with that 80's feel 2 it and when GB came out, nobody expected he could still deliver such a hit album like Batman, until D&P came out. With the leftovers on the Symbol album, the end of the Prince sound we all knew so well..... Sorry, I don´t agree. Especially Parade but also signottimes has so many pure songs with few instruments and a clear arrangement. I remember a critic after lovesexy asking: "From 1999 till lovesexy, every album a new style. What´s left for a new album." Unfortunateley he was right. Batman has a polished sound - and is aseptic. I hear every two years and that´s enough. However Partyman is pretty funky and electric chair has a great guitar solo. Batman was very succesfull, is better than 2 or 3 albums (with no doubt: Chaos and Disorder). Underrated? No! Last great record??? No! No! 1991! 1996! 2004-downloads!

JediMaster said: It was the first time I was truly dissapointed in a Prince album. Its mostly filler, with lackluster songs. Most of the songs on this album sound like Prince really didn't try at all. A collection of half-baked outtakes that weren't worthy of b-side status.
Co-sign. I think this was the first album that saw Prince not really try much. Most of the songs are sub-par and sound like rough ideas for songs. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

LOLZORS!11 Good for you. However, I disagree. Seems like he tried pretty damn well on "Batman" though. I mean, hell, he HAD a theme he was adhering to and he did a pretty damn good job with it. "Chaos & Disorder" - Was EXACTLY that. Prince didn't give a shit at that point and it musically shows. It was weak. Desire, it covers our faces

I don't think it's underrated as a whole. If you put crap like Lemon Crush and Trust on an album it will detract from the rest of it. I don't mind Arms of Orion. Songs like Future, Electric Chair, Scandalous, Vicki Waiting, and Batdance make this a good album though.

I would hardly call it "solid". Its weaker than 75% of his 90s output. I put it barely a scratch above New Power Soul Solid, because I didn't wear out the skip button like I did for the later albums. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

This thread was a good read. I don't think "Batman" is underrated, but it is certainly overlooked.
I know "Batman" has been brought up on occasion, but I haven't seen a real debate about it like this thread in a long time. Maybe I've just overlooked them. ALMOST makes me want to dig it up and listen to it, but now that I think about it, I may not have it on cd...only on lp. But Prince's picture on the lp is one of my favorites I'm firmly planted in denial

I like "The Arms Of Orion"
I like every song on 'Batman' but I have to admit, the song "Lemon Crush" doesn't really fit.It sounds out of place and it's the only song that doesn't really fit the theme of the album.Perhaps he should have replaced it with either "Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic" or "Dance With The Devil"? "Lemon Crush" could have been a B-side,or placed on a future album.
