Princes' #1 influence...

Who would you say is Princes' #1 influence? The artist to whom Prince owes the most debt?

Prince would first say Jehovah - then mention some names and not limit himself to one.

If there is only one answer i would say ..... between Jimi, James and Sly, et al

ummmmm ..... ummmmm...

..... uh .....

.....

Good Gawd! ..... James

The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me."

at this stage of his life and seeing ONA shows and several Musicology shows
i would say also most definetly without a doubt James Brown.
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!
woot!

I find this quite a ridicolous subject, like musical influences can be devided into nr. 1's, nr. 2's, etc.

Just consider Prince as some sponge working in a pie-factory wink

Anxiety

the musicology tour felt like a big james brown tribute band show. it was obvious, all over the place, virtually the whole time. prince is profoundly up james' ass, and i'm not necessarily saying that's a bad thing.

This is a tough one, but I actually would disagree with most of the people who're nominating James Brown. James Brown was a huge influence on EVERYBODY in black music since him, so any influence that manifests in prince from him could be indirect. In terms of the actual sound of his music I think P-Funk, Sly, and Stevie are the most prominent ones. The "Camille" character has its ancestors in Sir Nose D'voiddofunk, Sly's vocal stylings post-Riot (particularly Fresh), and Stevie's "Maybe Your Baby". Stevie and P-funks use of prominent electronics and keyboards in funk is certainly a HUGE influence on Prince, while the family stone's various eclectic funk stylings are regurgitated by prince all over the place: psychedelic pop/funk (Fun, Life, Runnin Away, Hot Fun In the Summertime), dark bubbling funk (almost all of Riot), hard rockin' funk (Dynamite, I wanna take you higher), loose jazzy funk (somebody's watching you, In Time, If You want me to stay), bluesy instrumental funk (sex machine, just like a baby). Stevie's layered vocals and multi-tracking and background textures created on synths, P-funk's massive dirty electric dancehall from space sound... I could go on and on but I definitely think these are the top three.

I can see this being the case with everyone on that list with the exception of the Jackson 5. Did I miss something?

Yup, it is impossible again to pinpoint it on one.
Flamboyance, Sly and Lil' Richard.
Funk; JB and do not forget George Clinton.
Larry Graham's Central Station was not the mold for his earlier band names, but with The Revolution he tried to recreate their blend of black and white.

What's in a name? He is a huge musical and style thief, but he made it into his own thing. His own limited thing, it now seems, but still.

Jimi Hendrix is Prince's #1 influence, but not the only influence. not only in the guitar gimmicks and stances, but in the clothing and purple ("haze") obsession as well.

No. Jack is right. Listening to Prince's music you don't hear an inordinate amount of James. Maybe in the live shows but not on record. I'd definitely go with Sly-- more so than Jimi, Joni, Stevie, and Santana. They're all big influences to be sure though.

i read an interview from years back where prince stated he was heavily influenced and utilised this influence in his early albums

rehashed old skool funk with modern touch

the influence he spoke of was none other than GEORGE CLINTON,PARLIAMENT and FUNKADELIC (also LARRY GRAHAM,SLY AND JIMI HENDRIX )
