Anyone Know About That 12-Disc NPG Sampling Series Set from 1999?

I recently brought the Rave Un2 The Year 2000 and in the "peep this" section of the DVD, there was some kind of promotion talking about a 12-disc set with over 700 sound samples of some of Prince's classic songs. The CD's were subtitled as "horns", "sounds", "drums", and "beats". The most bizarre thing about this collection was that it costed up to $700 dollars. The price just annoyed me, and the sounds the DVD provided from the set didn't sound inspiring for any remixer or DJ to even use. I also read something in the "Freedom Newz" section about this set and it was talking about how it was something of a collection of freedom and artistic developmentfrom his years at Warner to his rebirth at NPG Records. Have you all heard of this set because the old NPG Online site and 1-800-NEW-FUNK used to heavenly promote it and I don't really know if they ever sold it to anyone.

Like many Prince projects, it was concelled before it even hit the shelves. It certainly would have been a nice collectors item had it been relesased!

The idea was that, rather than people take samples of Prince's music without permission or payment, you could own the right to samples for inclusion in mixs for a one-off payment. On that basis, the payment was fixed at such a high level.

There was some mention (not unlike the announcement after people had placed online orders for Crystal Ball) that the project would only get off the ground once acertain n umber of orders had been received. As far as I recall, there was no facility to place an order ever offered through the website. No sets sold.

Dugen

When I 1st saw it on his website I was excited, imagine having all of those cool Prince sounds broken down, 2 be played any way u like. But then I was "oh no!" and hoped it didn't come out 'cause imagine all of those rap guys and whoever else using his sounds in their songs. I'm glad it didn't come out. Also, I wouldn't be suprised if he just made that ad 2 piss off WB.

While Prince was certainly not the usual personality that we are used to, I wouldn't diagnose him as "crazy" Don't forget he was battling Warners over the Masters of the body of his musical work, and it was upsetting, frustrating to him. He was charting new territory copyright wise. Furthermore, he wants control over who samples his music. By offering to sell the samples in this format, he felt he had more control. Like all geniuses, Prince feels his music is his family. Each song is a unique child. Look at it that way

Yes, have you heard it?

I believe the samples on disc that have emerged unofficially were prepared for use by the NPG.

Was Crystal Ball & Emancipation a statement of freedom and musical development?
