Ever started up any, um...inadvertent Prince fandom?

here's the thing: i called my dad earlier today to see how he's been. recently he bought a new car because his old one had caught fire (thankfully he was nowhere near it when it went up in flames), and he had told me that sometimes when he's out driving he listens to one of my old prince tapes that are still back in my old bedroom at his house. it totally surprised me because when it comes to p usually it illicits nothing more than a "he's cool, but he's a weird little dude!"-type response outta him. i was like, "you like prince?" he goes, "i like some of his stuff, yeah..." he didn't tell me which songs in particular though, i'm not gonna ask 'im. giggle also, he knows i'm a fan and in mid-conversation, outta the blue (like today) he'll ask me what prince is up to (if anything).

another good example is when i was in job corps about 4 or 5 years ago. i brought some of my prince videos with me to watch in the dorm (it wasn't against the rules--so long as it wasn't porn you could watch anything on the vcr). at first, the other girls in my dorm would pass by me like "ew prince, he's gay!" as time went on, they'd sit in the dorm lounge with me and watch stuff with me. by the time i was done with learning my trade and i got to leave job corps, EVERYBODY on my dorm was like, "ohmygod deja, we'll miss you and your prince videos!" lol

so, my question is this: have you ever made anybody else dig prince without coercing them into it in any way?

Nope. Never have and never will. If i got people turned on to Prince, sadly i wouldn't be a fan anymore. I love the whole underground following he has I.E. us. He's mainstream, but not too mainstream. If he lost that i would lose interest. I talk about him all the time. Fortunately, nobody's interested, and i don't think i could begin to get them interested in him in the manner that i am. They'd have to experience that on their own or they won't get him at all. Just my pov. Sorry if i sound negative or anything.

yes, i have led many down the "Purple Path".....

i don't think i have EVER tried 2 get ANYONE 2 like him..it just happens by hanging around me

my mom might b the best story....

i was at her house about 2 years ago and i found Dirty Mind and Controversy in her cassette case..

i asked her what she was doing with them and she said that she found them at a garage sale and was getting them 4 me but forgot 2 give em 2 me (sure, mom)

so last year i invited her 2 Musicology here in Detroit and she said "yes" and had a great time...

and she made sure 2 watch the NAACP's and tell me about it...so....that's the best story i've got

My brother was just a casual fan before but now he's really started to like Prince alot more. The other day he just randomly started analyzing the guitar solo from I Wanna Be Your Lover and it brought a tear to my eye. lol

Also I gave my best friend my extra Musicology CD cause he asked for it and I swear he likes that album more than I do!
If you will, so will I

Never made NE 1 a P freak. But I have turned people on to different songs. I have a friend that I work with and she always said she only liked P's "old stuff" and couldn't get with the new stuff cuz he got weird whofarted. NE wayz, our boss who is also a prince fan had some mix cd's of all Prince music. I dug one out one day in the midst of aurguing with my co-worker about him. I played eye Hate U and she damn near wet her pants. Listened to it 12 times that day... touched... I wanted to hit her. Got her on a few other 1's too.

It wasn't inadvertent at all but did have its inadvertent results. With all three of my partners, at first they just had to put up with the fact I was going to play Prince. Then, as time went on, they would start liking some songs and finally request them. The case in point is certainly my current beau, who has developed a list of faves that he has given to his friends as a compilation. The problem is that he mostly likes plaintive songs like The Cross, Something in the Water (piano version!), etc., so his compilation is kind of a downer! However, his all time favorite is probably Darling Nikki.

Well, sort of.

I would force my roomate, physically--I mean he was weak--I would force him to sit down and watch Prince live performances.

Then one day I made him watch UTCM with me--he hated it so much that by about 15 minutes into it, we started doing "ROck Horror Picture Show" lines to it's scenes.

Anyways, he's married now and I haven't seen him in 7 years--He owns about 10 Prince albums. Very impressive if ya ask me.

Yep. Spent the summer with my cousins in Canada in 84. The oldest one was 15 at the time. I was 17 and had been into Prince for a year. I brought all of my Prince cassettes to their house. She hated Prince and called him all sorts of names. We went to see Purple Rain. Total turn around. By the end of the summer I had to give her copies of all of my Prince cassettes. Don't know if she still likes him now though.
