Prince at his best: 1985 - 1988 Anyone of you dig the 1985 - 1988 area? I mean, in my opinion, from Around the World in a day unto Lovesexy, Prince was at his artistic height.
The first two albums Prince was still searching for his sound, From Dirty Mind unto Purple Rain he developed his trade mark funk/rock sound. Leading to his worldwide commercial breaktrough in 1984. During 1985 he expanded his musical horizons in a quick way, and did mix his trademark sound with all kind of elements: from psychedelic pop (Paisley Park, Raspberry Beret, Starfish and Coffee) to world music (the title track from Around the World in a day, Positivity), from semi-classical work (Condition of the heart, the work he did with Clare Fischer) to Gospel (The ladder, The Cross), From European styles of music (1920's cabaretlike music on Under the Cherry Moon, to french chanson on Do u lie and Jill Jones Violet Blue) to traditional R&B / soul (Mountains, Slow Love). And, not to forget, he did create some new, original styles also: - the drum machine / orchestra hybrid he created with Clare Fischer - the creepy, electrofunk of the Camille tracks - the experimental often long and dreamlike songs that were never released originally (Crystal Ball, In all my dreams, Theres Others here with us). Just like the area before (where Purple Rain showed a mix of all his influences and musical styles he used in the period 1980 - 1984), the Lovesexy record was a culmination of the experimenting during the period 1985 - 1988 (on this record he tried to make one 'sound' out all of the elements he used during that years). When it comes to the quality of his work, the incredible width of his work when it comes to the musicstyles and productiontechniques he did use, i can only compare this period in his career with the groundbreaking music The Beatles brought up during their 1966 - 1969 in their career. ofcourse..the culmination was the Lovesexy tour...the ultimate Prince experience....the best band, the Prince theme of love, sex and spirituality, the best performance....but nowhere to be found on DVD..Prince, why dont u deliver us this? and all outtakes of 1988...pffff... | |

This is a pretty standard opinion a lot of fans hold.

True. Those are my favorite Prince years.
