OMG. I just found out many Prince fans don't like Thunder!? Why? I love that song! It's up there with Anna Stesia.

So, I'm in the Music and More forum.
And there's a thread pitting D&P against Dangerous.

In the course of debate, several have dismissed "Thunder" as embarassing to play around friends, cheesy and corny.

Let me tell you, when I first got Diamonds and Pearls in '92 and put it in my headphones for a virgin listen, Thunder made me spellbound right away.

To me it's up there with Anna Stesia as one of Prince's best atmosphere songs.

As he describes this experience with whom I assume is the Holy Ghost, he evokes a story with an atmopphere that is trippy, sensual and mystical.

The sound of the instrumentation and the way he sings Thunder(!) rivals When Doves Cry in creating music that figurative expresses a song's theme. In his "thunder" screams and the surrounding sound, he conjures a powerful meeting with God that evokes emotions ranging from fear to rapture.

I swear when I heard it, I thought devil or angel was going to appear when I opened my eyes.

I've never NOT liked the song.

So, surprised to read that people don't love it.
I thought it was a universal love, like Anna Stesia, WDC, and LRC.

Ahh, yes. That would be me ... in my most vigorous protestant moments.

BUT right now, I'm in a nostalgic moment and am horrified to see one of my beloved songs brushed off like it were Jughead.

I LOVE thunder. It made the Diamonds and Pearls album all the better I think. In fact, a lot of the songs on that cd are really good

I think the reason many fans don't like this song (myself included) is because it sounds so horribly over-blown and a little camp (in a theatrical kinda way).

The musicianship is excellent, but some of the sounds used are very dated and it just screams "tack" to me.

Thunder is a fun track for me, definately 'over the top' when it comes to sound and lyrics, but in every way much better then almost anything on The Rainbow Children wink

If you get it, be prepared to have several songs disappoint you.

Most agree that Push, Jughead, and Live for Love suck. (I secretly like the whole album because the bad ones have grown on me like an ugly lover. razz )

Besides Thunder, I think you'll like Cream, Get Off, D&P, Walk Don't Walk, and maybe Insatiable.

The others are a toss up.

Rockability

"Thunder" has to be one of the most laughable songs in the history of music. Right up there with "Money Don't Matter Tonight."

I had Thunder overload in 1993 waiting in Wembley stadium for the concert to start. The extended version was playing on a loop along with a Coca Cola advert and after a few hours it was getting tiresome! Soon people were expressing dismay and booing each time it started. Many cries of, "play something else" were heard
biggrin .

It put me off the track for a good few months, but I have since come to love it once more.
RIP sad

"Thunder" is 1 of those songs I kinda 4get how good it is until I hear it again. I do like it though. The debate about whether is remainder of D&P measures up is still raging, however...

i dunno how it can be cheesy, i find it surprisingly deep and poetic - a lot of the colourful metaphors in it are really gd

i love thunder, it kicks ass - i really like the d&p album as well

I personally love the song.

I just kind of find it a little too glossy on the albulm.

Maybe if he would have given it more of a SOTT or LoveSexy vibe to it.

Thunder kicks, along with the rest of the CD. It may not be Gold, but it is Diamonds and Pearls

Same here, especially when I love the Batman movie so much after watching it a million times since I was 5.

For a fun Prince album, I'll just stick with The Black Album.
