I don't play follow the leader either...if you don't like the herd mentality that's fine...why put others down though?

That's the nature of messageboards. If i want a mass love in, i'll go to an MJ board or the NPGMC.

As i enjoy the org and it's varying opinions and relative freedom of speech, i'll stay put. I do regret using the term 'losers' though, it's not something i'd say in everday conversation, nor is it a word i remember typing too often here either. so i take that back.

rest assured, i am above anyone that claims to like 'Jughead' though! wink

we're in agreement on the nature of messageboards, I was addressing the thread topic is all.
I don't care for jughead either but I prefer to stay on a level field with those who do like it. I don't need to be above anyone, the higher up you are the farther you fall.

I agree. You do know the Jughead comment wasn't serious, right? It's not a song i'll ever listen to again in my lifetime though.

There are definately plenty of times when I feel Prince is the Greatest Of All Time!! When I do, I say so! On the org and any place I feel like saying it!!

I do think that there are certain individuals around here whose opinions are nothing but negative, derogatory, and down right abusive. I just want to state for the record, I ain't scared of you muthafukas either!!

We have all heard the refrain: Prince is great, but he's not the greatest musician that ever lived, and if you think that, you're just a fam-atic. I'm not saying that Prince is the G.O.A.T., it's impossible to measure that, tho there was a time when I believed that. But I put these questions to you:

1. Do you feel like it's unfashionable to speak of Prince in glowing terms, even on the org?

2. If you feel that way, do any of you try to watch what you say about Prince out of fear you might get dissed by other orgers, that it's not "org-fashionable" to praise Prince, or that you won't be perceived as a "fully-informed" music fan?

I'm not implicating any orgers in particular, I'm talking about whether this phenomenon exists.

Thoughts?

I can't say that I do those things you are asking about. I'm drawn to Prince because of his accomplishments despite all his imperfections. Therefore, I can praise Prince to the highest degree without being naive. If someone else doesn't understand that I don't give a shit. I'm relatively new here, but I don't give a shit about that either. My participation on this board has no significance regarding my intelligence concerning Prince or otherwise. Really good question though wink

I actually like all the diversity of opinion here as some others have said. It's just that there is a way to go about it with out being assholes to each other. I would say that the most belittling comments I have gotten have been from Mods. sad

I was hoping it wasn't serious..but I wasn't sure biggrin
LOL I listen to it time and time again...I'll rarely skip over a song...usually force myself to try it over and over. LOL. but...jughead is NOT on my top 10 list that's for sure. biggrin

Always good 2 c u, namepeace.

Do u blieve it is possible that a CONtingent may downplay his genius bcause it makes him more human, understandable, or 'reachable' 2 them?
There is also a train of thought that some may subconsciously wish 2 feel better about themselves. What do u think?

P.S. I love Prince. Prince rocks my muthafuckin world on a constant basis. There are Orgers who are afraid for one reason or another to admit that he rocks theirs too. Then there are Orgers who give honest criticism where they feel it's warranted, and still others who are just brats. But we love them too. biggrin

I don't give a crap what orgers think. It's nice when people agree or offer a perspective that makes me think again about Prince.

I dunno. Prince, like Miles, Monk, Mingus, and others before him, is not a "reachable" guy. Never has been. But there are a lot of folk on this earth like that.

Some people may understate their opinions of Prince so as not to appear too devoted to one artist, and to appear as someone who has more multifaceted tastes and an appreciation for music history.

But then again, I can't get into people's heads.

It doesn't bother me one way or another when people understate their opinion of Prince. I think one of the reasons they do it is because they are the ones who are still waiting for Prince to be innovative and groundbreaking again. These people have not accepted the fact that those days are over. So it's easier for them to downplay and be over critical of Prince's current work because he's not going to create 1999, Purple Rain or Around the World in a Day again. Rather than anaylze Prince in the context of the current music climate, they'd rather compare everything he does now to something that was created 20 years ago.

hendrix has maybe a couple strait cds and hes condsidered a legend. santana, duke ellington lived a full life, a prince has, and they are legendary. just about everyone can relate to the catchy genius of prince even if they arent a serious fan.

That is a fair and well-stated comment.

I must confess to doing this some myself, tho as time has gone on, I have found myself able to assess good albums like prince, The Truth. and Musicology, as well as near-great albums like The Gold Experience, on their own merits.

The best of Prince's post-80's work augments his legacy, it doesn't detract from it!
