Which is your fave Prince 'rap' / 'flow' ?

Prince has said that he doesn't rap but talks like James Brown used to over the top of some songs. Lets face it that sounds like a get out clause for someone that really cant rap!. However his voice sounds cool doing almost anything so i'll forgive him. To date my top 3 Prince attempts at rapping are:

1] My name is Prince - a lot of people missed the point on this one.

2] Dead on it - Good to see his competitive / sarcastic side before he decided to follow the crowd!.

3] Pussy Control - cool, witty and totally infectious.

4] The good life big city remix? - COOL.

5] Movie star - not a rap but very funny.

What are yours?.

"...take a kit...." Luckily I didn't misspell it as "take a kiD". What I of course meant was "take a Hit"

I don't really care for Mr. happy but I like this flow:

Third finger down, if U're wild, make a sound
Look at my people gettin' on down (Get down, get down)
Skip the Remy and let me have some Mary Tyler Moore
Of that New Power Soul...

I also like this line from Dead On It:

My nickname's Housie Pop - I'm badder than the wicked witcha!

I also like

"It's thunder when I'm on the mic, Daddy Pop's in the house and you're sho to like his Diamonds....."

from Push.

Other fav. rap songs:

Irresistible Bitch, P Control, Days Of Wild.

Good Choices. He had a mix to Pussy Control that he performed on the VH1 Fashion Awards in 1995. I think it was the Versace Remix. I was lucky to have downloaded it from Kazaa a couple months back. He used the rap from Get Wild remix (Kirk J Remix)and mixed it into Pcontrol. Made the song a lot better than it originally was.

Isn't it "I aint about to punt"? which means he's gonna go for it?

Maybe not. I don't know, but that's how I heard it.

18 and Over is the best flow that I've Prince put out. He actually has a style to his flow that's not rushed and he sounds like a real rapper.

And That Says What?!!!!

I like the way he raps on "Pope". It's kind of a lazy, drawling rap.

Defintely "Welcome 2 The SlaughterHouse: Rope of Silly-Con"

Because, because, because...

He sounds like himself and not: Speech, Slick Rick,Sir Mix-a-lot, or Tony M.

This song (with the Linn and distortion) sounds as if he could've done it at anytime from 81-82 (Controversy-Annie Christian) to now. He's really not trying to prove he can rap here.. It's a genuine effort.

Funny you brought this up because I was just contemplating Prince's rapping abilities. You know, alot of people don't take him seriously that way, but he is really quite a talented rapper.

I like and listen to rap alot, and when you do, you start to get really picky about it and even prefer it a little harder or more street sounding. For me, I like good flow and the rapper has to have their own sound and flavor. If they sound like anyone else, I'm immediately turned off.

Well, Prince has both of those qualities when he raps, so I definitely feel he is a good rapper (not to mention everything else, geez!) I especially enjoy "P Control", "Face Down", "My Name Is Prince"... you know, I don't think he's ever laid down anything wack... it's different than mainstream rap, but it's good!

You're trippin'!! wink

Of course, if you are comparing him to "real" rap as it exists in the rap section of the record store, then I can see why you'd say that. However, the truth is that Prince is clever and his flow is entertaining... his subject matter is not "rap" though.

Hammer was part of the evolution of rap, especially radio-friendly rap that suburban kids could digest. I mean, he made it ok for Puff Daddy to come along eventually. Hammer's thing was squashed by gangsta/street rap when Dre and Snoop took over. I liked the energy in Hammer's stuff at the time. In a way, old school rap was more like Hammer in subject matter because it was about the girlies and the house parties. Hammer's flow was weak though, his dancing and beats were tight at the time. Now rap is like half party and half street. Everyone likes their rap a little tougher now and it's balanced itself out... and no, Prince's rapping doesn't fit in, I agree. But it's got it's own thing...I think you have to appreciate it separately than any other rap. Is there ANY Prince rap you dig?
