prince myths we old skoolers perpetuate!

1)miles davis...cmon we all know he did a couple of so so songs and one concert appearance tho i always tell my non believing pals that theres loads of unrealaesed jazz classics..miles considered prince the greatest musician he ever met etc etc

2)crucial....we were all secretly gutted when we found out it was atlanta!

3)every concert is totally different..perhaps my biggest fib as we all know roughly all prince gigs follow a similar set list(sign, parade, musicology etc)with only a few changes every other couple of nights

4/new power soul WAS NOT a prince album..its an npg album(oh so that makes it alright to be crap.....!!)
cmon we all know that was just p!

5)grafitti bridge..the film....."you have to really get in2 it..blah blah..people didnt get the wizard of oz....blah".....oh doesnt it suck!!!!
6)heels..he "wears em cos women like em".....nowt to do with the fact hes tiny!
7)the after shows)now ive been to afew and they blew my mind but i cant help thinking an aftershow back in the day when we didnt HAVE 2 PAY and he just turned up at a club would have been cool.....fourty quid to get in2 the hippodrome eek

8)he IS NOT IN IT for the $..i always say this.....hmmm anybody remeber the npg store???

heheheh lol any more little fibs we all tell

I don't know if I agree. Not to say that I haven't heard some (if not all!) of these stories, but I don't think it's old skoolers that keep it going.

I think the longer someone has been into Prince, the less we are inclined to comment on his personal foibles. We discuss music, musical eras, favorites bands and b-sides, etc, but I think that most of us tune out the rumor mill.

The longer you've been around, the more you know.....and the less you say.

You know, this reminds me of a myth that I used to hear when I was growing up in the 80s: First, that Prince was an ordained minister in the 7th Day Adventist Church. Not too far off, considering his latest spiritual quest, eh?

i can see where you're coming from, as i've noticed there have been a few stretches of shows here and there where it seems like ol' boy is in a rut and kinda phones it in, but at least for the newcomers, even those shows are nothing short of fantastic. that said, when i saw all the shows prince did in chicago last summer, every one of 'em seemed to have their own little list of exciting differences and surprises, especially during the acoustic set. so, yeah, sometimes a few shows in a row can get a little samey on a prince tour, but by and large, i do think he strives to shake it up from show to show, and that's why he's one of the VERY few artists i like whose live recordings i really enjoy hearing.

Ok, #1, the Miles Davis one. Many folks believe that Prince and Miles recorded many tracks. My understanding is that only "Can I Play With You" has both Prince and Miles on it. As far as live performances, just that one at Paisley Park on new years, that's all.

Now, #2, the Atlanta one. Atlanta refers to Atlanta Bliss, and the idea that he was the actual horn player on the song Crucial, as opposed to Miles Davis or some other jazz great.

I've never seen anyone perpetuate the Miles rumour, other than idiots who think they've got some secret album from the two in the Crucial bootleg.

I'd rather give people the truist impression possible rather than circulate old rumours that were debunked years and years ago.

Although, I did used to tell people Prince still made some decent music in the 90s - somehow they never quite fell for it. confused lol

biggrin I've never found myself fibbing for P. He's does his thing well enough you don't have to. Friends will ask questions about the name changes and stuff and I'll he's lost it or my best guess.
When GB came out, I told them view at your own risk. And don't talk to me about it.
When I come home shows, they expect the bragging. First row for last years show!

I never heard he was an ordained minister, but I did hear that he was raised in that church. His career-long focus on God and sex is similar to many of us who were raised in the church (any church) but felt constricted by it so celebrated both madly.

Well, in THAT case! lol

Yeah, we can promote some B***S*** in a heartbeat!

"His name isn't Prince anymore. What do you call him? Well, if you're always with him, you never have to call him."

"Paint 'slave' on your face, and stand around outside the David Letterman studio." Duh.....OK!

"Prince is dead."

Yeah I definately agree with 1,2,3. There's nothing wrong with adding a little mystery!

A few others we should add:

We always exagerate stuff like:
-"He puts out four albums a year"
-"He plays 27 instruments" (I don't know where that number came from but everyone seems to quote it!)
-"He's not really a JW, he just likes exploring different religions now and then" (I tell myself this everynight!)
-"His name change really was a spiritual thing" (but you kind of knew all along that it was just a getmeoutamydeal thing)

2)crucial....we were all secretly gutted when we found out it was atlanta!

I knew from jump that Miles Davis was not playing on "Crucial." That sounded nothing like Miles.

Yeah, me too. I think mainly those who weren't truly familiar with Miles's work thought that it was even a possibility it could've been him.

how 'bout the myth that he can't read music - everythings by ear? total crap. I saw him before a concert (NPG music club) re-writting part of the horns section - discussing key changes, ect.

Hell, I can read music and I suck.
