Prince in the 70's

Prince was around back in 1978. The name of his first album for you and his first popular song I wanna be your lover.

I didn't know P back then being that I was sleeping in my crib. My mon did however. She always though Prince was somebody the wierd white kids used to listen to before he became popular.

He surely wasn't as populat but his sound hand the distint sound of the 70's.
So who of you out the remember Prince before his 80's stage of mamouth popularity?

I remember him before he "blew up". I had heard of him and some of his music. The song STILL WAITING was the one that did it for me. He blew me away and here I still am.

I became aware of P from the cut "Soft and Wet". They used to play it on the radio all the time. I dug the song. Being very young, I thought that P was a white girl singing and the name of the band was "Prince"! Anyway, I found out a few months later from my older cousin, who had the album. At this time, the album didn't do anything for me, except for "I'm Yours'. When P hit next with "I Wanna Be Your Lover", I dug that song alot. It reminded me of The Emotions. My cousin, she was a HUGE P fan, even then. I couldn't get with the way P looked on the album cover. I thought he was trying to look like a black Leif Garret. But , I did like the album. "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" and "Bambi" really impressed me. I liked "With You" and "It's Gonna Be Lonely"a lot as well. I saw him on American Bandstand and thought he acted really weird and uncool. A little later, when "Dirty Mind" dropped, people were tripping off of the album cover, with the trench coat and drawers. This is the first time I thought "this dude is REALLY out there." I was a fan of Bowie, Kiss and Parliament-Funkadelic, so I was more than hip to acts being flamboyant, but this was the first time I was hearing from damn near EVERYBODY that P was gay. Right On! magazine had p on the cover looking crazy as hell. The title read "Here Is Prince. He Sure Is Different Now."

I think it's Gayle Chapman, the girl before Lisa Coleman.

LOL, I'm sure I still have that Right On! My first memory of Prince was Soft & Wet (am wearing it out right behind Sexy MF -- "Hey! Lovah!"...then that disco snare). That song was played on R&B stations. I thought he was a woman and when I discovered he was a man...oh, at 10-11 years old I was in love and have been for 25 yrs.

I too thought he was a weirdo on AB, but so loved the hair, and didn't really dig Dick Clark's attitude towards him. Did you see him on Don Kirschner after Saturday Night Live sporting the Purple la-may (spelled phonetically (?) for a reason) trench and singing Uptown and Party Up? That's when I really fell in love.

The comment about the black Leif Garrett...too funny, cuz Leif was all over Tiger Beat and such!

Thanks for helping me remember.

Hey rudeboynpg, I'm loving your pic selections! I hope this one dispels that whole nose job nonsense.

Anyhoo! I've been a fan since the very beginning! Prince captured my attention with the music, I was in love with his voice. I finally saw what he looked like after "Dirty Mind" came out. I knew then I was hooked for life! My parents didn't approve though, they kept trying to get me to like someone "wholesome" like MJ. LMAO! They thought Prince's look and his music were going to lead me straight down the path of sex, sin, and destruction.

Well, my dad called me the other night and asked if I'd seen the NAACP Image Awards. Of course, he knew I had. He just wanted to take the chance to finally say he was glad they were wrong about Prince and how proud he is of the way my life actually turned out! I cried like a baby!

Thank you, Prince! That's just another to add to the long list of "thanks" I owe you!
