DMSR live ....

Well,
i was listening to DMSR live from the musicology tour today and must say that the song is a real funk jam but why the stupid horns ( i mean the many solos by parker ). The horns destroy the whole songs. Prince should use the hornheadz again instead of parker and dulfer. They jam a wayyyyy tooooo much. the same problem with lets work. This song is sooo funky but why with horns. They do not work well on this song ( the same with controversy ...)
What do u think?

He's destroyed the song with muddled horns and lyric changes. He needs to retire this one.

I'll listen to DMSR from 1999 or Small Club when I need a hit.

"What the hell you come here for?" is changed to some new jibbajabba too. A small change here and there can really stink up a song that I find nearly perfect in the first place.

Yes, Prince, let us not slight the hard-working whores of the world! After all, a large percentage of them are probably former proteges of yours.

I just don't get how people can go so nuts over this small lyric change.
That's just nit-picky (if I remember that word correctly).
They still rocked that song.

Now, "the bible's the only book she reads" is a whole different thing.

i was just pointing out a lyric change, i love the current live versions of DMSR and Controversy funky as hell especially at the aftershows, but i can see why people get pissed with lyrics being changed. Its amazing that hell change the lyrics 2 b all good and look like hes a new man, but hell re-release crystal ball at the musicology store for download with all the cursing / profanity still there, so why bother changing the lyrics in the first place??

cool

Shit, thinking about this.... disbelief
I guess he was so very happy to find a rhyme there that expresses his "new" believes that he couldn't see how stupid that line actually is and how totally crap it sounds.

He doesn't feel comfortable performing those lyrics so he changed them. It is his song..

To release old music with curse words is different. That was him then.

Of course it was funky. Anyone who would denied that these re-worked verisions are not funky should turn in their funk cards.

Just to post on this board that "Horns" ruined song tells you people don't know their funk. No Horns no funk. Goes back to JB.

I think you have a point! In my opinion, neither Candy nor Maceo deserve the huge amount of solo space he gives them... They're both good players, but actually quite limited. Personally, I'd rather listen to Eric Leeds, who I feel has more substance and variation in his playing. But Candy and Maceo are bigger names, so I guess he has to let them play...

Still, I have nothing against the horn section in itself, I definitely think he should use them! Especially in these times, when noone else uses horns. Remember that when everybody else had horn sections, Prince used synths instead, up until mid-80´s. Just to be different. Today it's the opposite...so he knows what he's doing, for sure.
