"1999" was the theme song (how apropos, the class of '99 had a theme song ready-made )--anyways, i was the lone prince freek of my entire class. two friends of mine who were on the prom committee came up to me one day. one of 'em goes, "me and so n'so have been fighting over this all day...is the name of the song 'party like it's 1999' or just '1999'?" fuck, i wanted to smack the shit outta them both. Not referring to your situation exactly, but you know you're pathetic when a 14 year old who didn't live in the 80's knows more about 80's pop culture than you.

Sometimes it's a bad thing. Don't get me started on my Prince rants. I know that's right. Remember my thread when i was singing Glam Slam at work and my co-worker asked me "What's a Lovesexy? I love Musicogy!!" I hate that shit. I made the mistake and work my Purple Rain shirt to work on dress down day and EVERYBODY had something to say. I wanted to smake 3 shits out of all of them. "Oh when my son was 3 years old and that came out, he used to pretend to play Purple Rain all the time. It was so cute!" Um.....no. One time i was bored at work so i was writing the hallway speech from CB Ext. and the manager read it and said he put it in my "file" and that i was writing smut. Kiss my ass you bald bitch. Yes, but I was even more irritated when my drunk friend said after the Musicology concert:
"I just wish he'd done more of the hits, like [singing]'Purple Rain, Purple Rain...'" Check this song out at:

WOW!!! listen to some of you complaining about songs from Purple Rain being played on the radio! You're so lucky to've anything Prince has done played on the radio. One of you even has a 'Purple Rain' T-shirt and has work mates who've heard of 'Lovesexy'! In the UK it's as though the man doesn't exist and is a figure to poke fun at! To hear something from that album played on the radio would be a miracle. There's no respect for Prince by the media in the UK!
However, I do think that Prince was more popular here post Purple Rain. That album only got to out 7 or 8 in the charts but ones that came a few years later, such as Lovesexy or GB, went straight to Number 1. Hence, if there is a Prince song on the radio and at the same time a blue moon, it's usually Kiss, Gold, TMBGITW etc. I actually love this album and the title track even more so. I'm not sick of Purple Rain one bit. In fact if anyone does mention 'that rain song', I try to educate them by offering to burn copies of 'Prince','For You' and 'The Time' for them! While I loved, cherished and adored the PR album back in the 80's I hardly ever listen to it now...way too much exposure. But I do like listening to all those other songs that the casual fans don't listen to because it makes me feel as if I'm a special member of his world and those who aren't in it are missing out.
I used to argue to the death about how Prince is so much more than PR and 1999 but it dosen't bother me anymore, I just tell them I have all but a few albums,go see him in concert when I can and leave it at that. What am I supposed 2 do when the President can't get nothin' passed?

I get tempted to go on a Prince rant when people say stuff like that but I usually try to stop myself cause I do the same thing with other ppls favorite music.
This guy I used to like was a huge Beastie Boys fan, so of couse when he tells me this I respond. "Really?! Oh I love that song 'You gotta fight, for your right, to PPAARRTTYY!!" he just sorta smiled and gave me the same look that I give people who butcher When Doves Cry to prove "how much they love Prince too" If you will, so will I

as if that is his only album... And do you then go on rambling about all the other albums they missed? I do , admittedly.. But I'm getting better at keeping the Prince history lesson to myself. BTW.. I agree Purple Rain did put him the radar, but chances are when I hear something from it on the radio, I will probably change the station.. I'm sick of that album.. Anything is better than The Rainbow Children!!!! Purple Rain rocks!!!

I'm not the least bit tired of it. That album is an absolute fucking stunner. It's pure magic. Purple Rain, The Beautiful Ones, When Doves Cry, etc.-these songs are timeless. They capture Prince's genius.
I don't mind when someone lists this as their favourite Prince album either. What annoys me more is the stigma from hardcore fans that you're not as big a fan as them if Purple Rain is your fav Prince album instead of Lovesexy or SOTT. I mean, I absolutely adore albums like 1999, SOTT, and Dirty Mind, but can I help it if his most popular album is simply the one I think is also his best? I only have a problem with ppl who can only name Purple Rain out of his albums yet claim to be fans. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.
