Bass on Black Album

Does anyone know if Prince played bass on Le Grind or 2 Nigs?

The bass on "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton" is commonly attributed to Levi Seacer Jr.

But it's Prince all the way.

Thanks for the input.I've always thought that it was Prince on those tracks, but have also thought that it would be so hard to give up that style.Check out the first track on the Madhouse cd 8(?) maybe it's 16. The album where the woman is on her knees playing with a dog. Is that Prince? It's real busy like Le Grind.

About the studio version of "2 Nigs"? Of course I'm sure.

It's a well documented fact that Prince plays the bass on that track.

Levi is an awesome bass player but let's also give credit where credit is due.

Actually, I think I've heard/read remember different. Prince is on keys, Sheila on drums... could be wrong of course.

Sorry to spoil the spontaneous Levi appreciation society that has suddenly formed in here, and much props to the man, but the fact remains that both "Le Grind" and "2 Nigs United 4 West Compton" are not just Prince compositions but also feature Prince on bass.

Whether some pople like it or not biggrin

"Originally entitled The Funk Bible, the Black Album was made up of tracks taped between September '86 and March "87. The only exception is When 2 R In Love, which was taped in early October '87 at Paisley park when Prince began assembling the record. Rockhard In A Funky Place, which had been recorded at Sunset Sound in October '86 was a Camille track, while 3 of the other songs were recorded at Sunset Sound for a birthday party Prince threw for Sheila E on December 11th '86 at Vertigo in L.A.: Bob George, 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton (the odd title came from an expression Sheila E used to use) and Le grind. He wanted to record some mindless party songs for her, not too much went into them. He just recorded the tracks, walked over to Bernie Grundman's to master an acetate for the DJ to play that night, and that was it. [They] were never intended for an album." - taken from the book DMSR by Per Nilsen.

Shame that doesn't confirm who played bass on the track(s), but is does imply most of the work was done by Prince.

Whatever - the best bit about the above for me is how fucking cool would that be, having someone write and record 3 tunes as quality as Le Grind, Bob George and 2 Nigs United 4 West Compton for your birthday party?! drooling

And I'll bet they sounded incredible over whatever rig they used for that party!

I think it sounds like him. Reminds me of the bass solo on the SOTT concert movie. I think it's played with a pick and Levi used to do that, I think.
Yes, I think quite a lot.

Seems like that's all you really wanted to say in the first place. Posting a quote from a book means nothing. Just because someone writes something down doesn't make it true.
That's Levi on bass on 2 Nigs.

I always thought it was levi because of the proximity of the sott movie back in the day, but then I thought I read otherwise...hmmm lemmm see my references...

according to "the vault" 2 nigs is "sheila on drums" and "prince flexing muscles with a succession of solos on organ synth and bass."

and it was recorded in early december of 1986 around when his crystal ball album idea was veto'd by Warners. Levi and Bonnie joined his live band and were brought by sheila e the next month in January....

so.... hmmm... the book could be wrong....

Its Levi. Find another bass part that Prince has played BACK THEN that's even remotely similar to 2 Nigs. It doesn't matter anyway. I KNOW its Levi. You guys are quoting from books. "Musical bibles" n' shit. HA! Some people believe everything they read.

nope. i've heard prince play bass like that before on boots. plus, i take giotto's word as basically sacrosanct. biggrin until prince or someone involved with him tells me it's not him, i will continue to believe it is. i can hear prince's style a mile off, man. levi has a much more chromatic jazz style than prince anyway...and that style is not as present in this solo.

I'm not trying to convince anybody. That ain't Prince on bass on 2 Nigs. However much printed material & quotes from books is presented won't change that. Prince is known for not giving band memebers credits for their work; especially back then.

Well, first of all there are not credits on the Black Album whatsoever.
And it's been the other way around as well.
