The song is totally awsome from beginning to end. The first time I listened to it on the record player I had to run and turn it down....all I needed was for my dad to hear a bunch of screamin and moaning and me and my album would have been on some serious lock down.

I first got into Prince when I was like thirteen and I friend of mines uncle was getting into him and I took a couple of albums over to this guys house for him to borrow one of which was 1999.

Anyway he started playing LCD in front of everyone in the house, his kids, my friends Dad!! Everyone!! eek

I got them to switch it off before the whole boff bit!!

I was so embarrased! redface smile

Them drums are real - and slammin! Awesome snare action and listen to the echo on the snare for the "cannon" effect before the noodling keyboard and the lovemakin' section. John Blackwell told Modern Drummer mag that two tunes turned him onto P's drumming - Controversy and I think the other was LCD.

Question: so, er, does said Lady take P "for a ride" from the city to the cleansing waters of Lake Minnetonka? They seem to bug out from the hustle bustle and we soon hear seagulls. SUCH a great touch!

Yeah but isn't only the "claps" that are programmed?

I don't have the album nearby now. I'd say some of the snare is too.... maybe it's doubled? The claps are definitely from the Linn though.

from what i remember from the purple reign bbc radio2 docu someone goes on about LCD being a good example of princes innovation, and says that its programmed but then he used a live snare. so i'm guessing its programmed apart from the snare

either way its a great example of princes mind when it comes to writing drum pieces, its like, they aren't just drums but as much a part of the song as the guitar etc. think of kiss (i know its not arranged by him though) dorothy parker and when doves cry. gotta love the drum sounds and rhythms he does!

Lady Cab Driver IS essential P. This is, on another level, basically P competting against The Time. P gave The Time some of his "funkiest" material during this period. Before the 1999 album, P was still trying to figure out what market he should target. P had his eye on crossing over big time. That was his main goal. BUT, he fucked around and gave great material to some cats that could throwdown live, and he HAD to figure out how he could keep from getting showed up by his own creation. So, u have "Lady Cab Driver". That's P saying "Hey ya'll, look at this. Fuck The Time. This is REALLY how it's done." After seeing P for the first live on the Controversy tour, I already KNEW P could bang. (slang for being a great musician). So, I wasn't surprised when I first heard this song. That's just P getting down, period. As a musician, I've always adored this song because of his "conviction" in his playing. P sounds "pist off". U can actually hear this in his playing, like he has something to prove. The instrumental breakdown is one of the truest things, musically, P has ever done. The lead guitar section is just "stoopid", it's so good. His drumming is in the pocket. P, I don't think, would have ever even recorded this song if The Time didn't exist. 1999 album has always been and always well be my favorite album of his, and this is one of the main reasons why.

I never thought much of this song, but after reading this thread, I listened to it again, and it's one of my favorite Prince jamz! A lot of his 80's songs sound dated now, but this song sounds modern 2day! biggrin So funky!

I have begged and pleaded with Prince for years to play this song live again. At the 2002 celly, he played almost every song from the 1999 album EXCEPT THAT ONE. It remains to this day, my fave Prince song, ever.

Ok, this comment sent chills down my spine! Back in the day, this song could pack the dance floor faster than any tune I can think of. Just the THOUGHT of hearing him play this live.....

Isn't it mainly P on live drums? One of his best examples actually. I think ti's just the Claps on the 2 and 4 that are the Linn going throughout.

I love his live drum work on LadyCabDriver.Almost as much as his drumming on "Irresistible Bitch"

If you do not own "1999" the album, stop what you're doing and go get it!!
