woot! BEST post I've read on the Org in ages! woot!

MORE please!!!!

I'm starting to understand just how much of an impact Prince had during the 'Dirty Mind' era reading both this thread and Dansa's. I've sort of always taken this period for granted. But, as someone else posted on another thread, for those who weren't around first-hand it's very difficult for newer Prince fans to imagine just how out-there Prince was during this era. (And reading this article, well I knew he was a little kooky but sheesh...! lol ). It's - dare I say - almost like reading about another artist. Now I see why vainandy, Hotlegs and co stick to their guns. Damn, I wish I'd been around to see all this. sigh

nod I totally agree with you. Although I was born around the Dirty Mind era I understand just how werid and as you said 'out-there' and shocking Prince was back then. Back in the early eighties you didn't have MTV and there were not sexed up commericals like there are now and people were very close minded sexualy back then My dad used to read stories, hear stories about Prince when I was growing up and no wonder he thought Prince was a sleezy nutbar! He really freeked people out back then.By the time I was old enough to get into him he had toned it down a little/or society got less shockable one of the two but no wonder my dad was like shake when I got into Prince because of that exposure to Prince back in the Dirty Mind era. biggrin

Yes!!! Those were THE days. No one can possibly imagine what it was like back then unless they lived through it. There was nothing like experiencing Prince in his hey day and hearing him between the other hot funk in those days like Cameo, Roger & Zapp, Lakeside, The Barkays, and his old arch rival Rick James. Prince and Rick James were THE wildest things in R&B back then.

By the time you were older, Prince was much, much, much more tame. I only wish I was older at the time so I could have gone to clubs and really experience the era to the fullest. biggrin By the time I graduated high school and could go to clubs (18 was legal age back then), he was in his psycadelic/retro phase, so you know I was really pissed.

I'm wondering if Pyro is confused with the Iran hostage situation that was going on back then. That was the exact time period it was going on and people were afraid that we would be going to war because of it.

As far as Pyro's validity, from what I've seen over on rickjames.com, everyone pretty much takes his word on his stories (the facts and not his opinions) and he's one of the ones that's been posting for a while. Everyone is always talking over there about the days when members of The Stone City Band and Rick James himself used to post over there. I think these guys would have busted him out if he wasn't who he said he was.

nod I agree w/you again Vain Baby wink . I have checked with other sources as well and Pyro is the real deal. Alot the people who are on the site actually are Rick's employees and friends. Moreless, he probably got the wars mixed and had a brain fog. Oh well, no big fucking deal. Anyway, when I was a kid watching P's videos on this show that used to come NBC called Rock Concert, I kinda knew something was up w/himand the girl on keyboards. If he didn't know any better, it could have scared the hell out of him. The mere mention of the word "draft" would scare the hell out of a young male that didn't know any better. I turned 18 in 1985 and my grandmother was all over my ass to register before my 18th birthday. I was refusing to register because I was afraid I would be drafted. She said "Hell, we're not at war, what the hell are you afraid of?". If I had been 18 back in 1979/1980 back when the hostage situation was going on, I would have scared as hell, especially with Reagan first coming into office and not knowing what to expect.

Rockability

That is an interesting story.

If you would like to make a story of your life, I suggest adding more depth to the romance outside of touring and more about you, yourself.

Honestly though, this story makes only for good gossep. There is no "meat" here.

No offense, but being in your line of work at the time and at the age you were (most likely mid 20s), you should have been in awe of Rick James. You do mention the awe of his persona, but not the awe of being there to hear him live.

I do find it a little suspicious about your reaction to your first encounter witnessing Prince perform. People in there late 50s I have met who have seen him in tiny clubs in the late 70s thought he was great. He has a talent of live performance, and if you were used to Rick James and grew to like his music, you would have been rocked by Prince.

I guess that was where your story was going. Even though Rick James was the good guy, this was all about Prince and his evil, selfious, tendencies. At least that is the picture you hand us.

I am not that gullable, but nice try.
