Dirty Mind

Just got the CD and have been listening to it for the past three hours. I love Dirty Mind the song, but the rest is kind of boring. I know that this is the kind of statement that gets people lynched, but if anyone else feels this way, please come forward. I'd like to know if I'm not the only fan who feels this way.

if you just got the cd and have only been listening to it for only 3 hours, you probably haven't let it truly sink in. don't be so quick to write an album off. stuff takes time, y'know.

Controversy's next on my buy list. I guess I'll give it some more time to sink in. I'm kinda pissed off it's only 30 min.

Dirty Mind is P's worst pre 1999 work; it's too contrived. Controversy shits on it. The self-titled album is also way better.

Dirty Mind IS a great album...just try 2 remember the album came out in what?

1980? 1981?...it's like NOTHING anyone else was doing at the time...so, it should get some points 4 that...

You're probably right. I'm so young, I couldn't appreciate how revolutionary it might have been 25 years ago.

I have never cared for this album.
It has a few really cool tracks scatterred in an otherwise demo-sounding album.

I think that for it's time, it was probably mind blowing to people, but I didn't hear the album until after Parade was released, and by then Prince had proven his vocal skills could be many times what they where in Dirty Mind.

Also, the title track itself is repititous and really kind of boring.

I don't hate Dirty Mind by any means, but I certainly can't sit through the entire thing.

imo Dirty Mind is as important Prince album as 1999,Purple Rain,SOTT, and lovesexy.
u might not realise it but Dirty Mind made alot of artists at the time "get back in the studio".

P is consciously raising the sexual ante in this album. The sexual innuendo is completely ott in some spots and it doesn’t seem as effervescent and natural as the prior albums. The production value is also not as crisp as the self-titled album. When You Were Mine is the only great cut on there. Uptown is another classic. Do it all night is an inferior I Feel For You. Sister is a throw away IMO. The rest are good funky songs without great hooks.

Handsclapsfingasnapz: I think you mentioned in a thread yesterday(that one where people were volunteering to review his CDs(but only one review has been posted)) that you'd do another review of Dirty Mind. Since this is the era you love the most and you had such an excellent review of Prince, I'm really interested in reading this review. Please post it soon.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing about Do It All Night. The lyrics throughout the album are interesting, especially on Uptown, but the music just isn't grabbing me and seems kind of bland.

You need to give "Dirty Mind" some more time. Then, if you like it, you like it, and if you don't, you just don't. I love it.

Yes, you definately need to get "Controversy".

you gotta remember that:

a) he was barely legal during the first two joints, so of course they weren't gonna be as strung-out as dm ended up being...that, and he was still pretty wet behind the ears.

b) this was more or less his coming-of-age album. when you realize somethin, you gonna make sure that everybody else knows it too; whether it be that you're not a wallflower, have half a brain, or that you're not the nice bastard that folks have thought all along...which was the very intention of the album.

holy flaming hohners...good thing that i just got to work on my album review. you'll see exactly what this album's all about, once i'm finished with it and post it up. i'm workin on it in another tab on my browser (i love mozilla and its tabs, man touched).

gimme about an hour/hour and a half, tops. typing

The following songs received massive airplay on R&B stations in my area at the time:

Uptown
Head
Dirty Mind
Partyup

"When You Were Mine" got no airplay on R&B radio. In fact, it was released as the B Side to "Controversy" the following year. The year after that, when the pop crowd first discovered Prince with "Little Red Corvette", a lot of them went back and discovered "When You Were Mine". Cyndi Lauper even remade it.

This album, defined the sound of the 80's...
If I'm not mistaken, I think it was the one of the first
albums, to display a parental sticker on it....

When You Were Mine and Uptown are among my favorite songs ever and then you also have Partyup and Gotta Broken Heart Again on this great album, and don´t forget Dr.Fink on Head ...
This one is definitely a classic, a must have. In my opinion this one and the Gold Experience are typical examples of albums that were so much rawer and better performed live.
