i remember the day this came out, david bowie's 'outside' came out at the same time and i was in high hog heaven, cuz my two favorites put out new albums on the same day.
i remember back then, i was kinda out of sorts with everything prince was on about at the time, and i had just moved to NYC so i was all about punk and glam and the whole east village asthetic, so i was all about the bowie album when those records came out (not to mention it's a freakin' wonderful piece of music)...though over the years, i've slowwlly warmed to gold, and now i can say that some of my favorite songs by prince are on that record. funny thing is, i was annoyed by both 'gold' and 'outside' for making use of silly segue tracks. i hate segues to pieces. they break up the flow of the music in my opinion.

Oh Yeah,I remember Outside was a very intresting album, I even considered it more as a kind of book instead of an album,if U know what I mean.It was Bowie's way of connecting with the current generation WITHOUT selling out or using popular producers(something Madonna and others were really into a that moment). TGE is one of his best albums of the 90's,less commercial than D&P or Symbol but critics were much better on this album. Great songs and great sound!! (I remember an article where they said P had reached the top what concerned production on this album). A Prince top 10 album IMO. Love4oneanother

And I have 2 admit Bowie achieved his goal that year,
he played at festivals(top of the bill) ,got a lot of airplay at rock/alternative radio. While TGE got lost somewhere between pop and rock channels...too bad. Love4oneanother

OK,let's try this!!
1.Around the world... vs P Control -- can't choose 50/50 2.Paisley Park vs Endorphine machine -- TGE 3.Condition of the heart vs Shhh -- AWIAD 4.Raspberry Beret vs We march --AWIAD 5.Tambourine vs The most beautiful girl -- TGE 6.America vs Dolphin -- once again not easy..TGE 7.Pop Life vs Now -- AWIAD 8.The ladder vs 319 -- TGE 9.Tempation vs Shy -- TGE And the last 3 songs on TGE are even better than some of the above. AWIAD is a classic album and great 2 listen in one take but TGE got some real kick ass grooves. Love4oneanother

Some of the worst songs of his career appear on this album. It's a stinker!
'Dolphin' had the same effect on me as 'Springtime For Hitler' did, when I first heard both songs. I'm sure that people only hype the album up because it's hard for newbies to find.

A "Stinker"? Gold has got to be his best album of the nineties.

Wow, this is in the CD player in the car this moment. Interesting...funky, very overlooked and underrated gem of an album. I am MrVictor....

This is one of my favorites. Dolphin happens to be on my shit list of Prince songs. Now and 319 are throw aways, but there rest are good songs.

Most fans love it. You're as in the minority on this one as you are on your love of New Power Soul (his worst album, not just of the 90s, but EVER). TGE is a tight set, with only one or two lacking tracks (I would prefer "We March' to have been left off of it, and "Days Of Wild" to have been included) Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. It was such a joy looking through the stacks of vinyl and also it was were I bought the fan Mags. Often Prince videos and concerts would be playing on an old tv the had near the back. On that tv was the first time I saw the American Bandstand performance with prince dancing in his goldpants. I would linger there for a looooong time and then my friends and I would get a papaya drink and hotdog on the corner as a treat before heading to the park. The computer age has made wrekkastows hard to come by. I still carry one of their silver business cards in my purse all these years. How are the stores in Chicago, Anxiety? OceanOfViolets said: How are the stores in Chicago, Anxiety? there are some good ones, but what you said is true - the coming of the internet and iTunes is closing down a lot of the indie record shops...i've even seen a few big chain wrecka stows close down over the last year or two. there are a couple of good stores still around in my neighborhood, though - reckless records is really good...it's where i go to get used CDs and new stuff on the cheap...and evil clown records has a really nice, eclectic selection (kinda like Other Music in NYC), though their prices are anything but reasonable. i go there to find stuff i wouldn't discover anywhere else. it's worth an extra two or three bucks to come across that really obscure re-issue that i didn't know existed.

I was (quite literally) just listening to OUTSIDE. A fantastic concept album. Unlike segues in other albums…I really think they work in OUTSIDE because of the overriding narrative. (They don’t strike me as campy…maybe I’m biased?) (I really enjoy the gold album too---just had to add)

Seems like a zillion years ago now. I bought it (i was 10) and friends were saying "man thats girly shit, buy Blur instead". Then I played them "pussy control". they loved it as the word "pussy "was said.
I thought "p control" meant Prince control 'till I heard it. Why arn't there lyrics to it in the booklet? I don't get it?

Yeah thats a good question: Why aren't the lyrics to P Control included in the cd booklet?? I've wondered that for quite awhile.

(I really enjoy the gold album too---just had to add) i like the segues in 'the love below'...but i really think the segues added to the music, in much the same way the chaotic blather at the end of 'eye no' blend into the intro of 'alphabet st.' on lovesexy...it doesn't really intrude, but it kinda cleanses the palette between songs. it's possible for segues to work, i'll admit to believing that. i just don't think it worked on 'gold' or 'outside' - i don't think the segues make either album 'lesser' works...some of prince's and bowie's best songs are on those two albums...though i do think the inclusion of segues compromises the albums just a wee bit. they're easy to avoid on 'outside' - not so easy to avoid on 'gold'.

TGE's my fav Prince album. The only song that should've been left off is now. P. Control is hilarious. Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

Wha?? "Now" is great! I'd get rid of "We March". It's an incredibly weak track, and doesn't fit the tone of the album at all. Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)
