I'd like to thank my mom. She took me to my first Prince concert, the Rick James/Prince tour when I was in the 5th grade. All these years I thought I'd asked to go to the concert, but when I asked her a few months ago, she said that I didn't ask, her and her friend decided to take me and her friend's son to the concert. I remember having my mom purchase one of those professional b/w pics of P that there were selling at the concert. I couldn't wait to go to school the next day to show off the pic and tell everyone about the concert.

I'm going to thank...Backstreet Boys. Yes, those Backstreet Boys. Time upon a once I was a shameless pop fan. All I'd had access to was the local Top 40 radio station. That' all I knew, so that's all I listened to. My parents owned what I now know was some incredible music by incredible artists, but being the all-knowing preteen that I was, I'd refused to give any of it a listen, dismissing it as old folk's tunes. Backstreet Boys were my all-time favourites. (istilllovethemandfuckyouifyoudon'tlikeit) I'd keep up with every little thing about them, read every article, watch every interview, etc. It didn't take me long to notice that every time they were asked who their favourites were, instead of naming other pop acts, they'd mention all sorts of artists that were in my parents "old folk" vinyl collection. Led Zep, The Beatles, The Stones, The Temptations, Chuck Berry -you name it, one of them had mentioned the act at least a few times as a favourite. But another name that kept being brought up fairly consistently was Prince -someone I only knew because the paparazzi page on a magazine I'd bought had referred to him as "Mr. Squiggle". The more BSB (specifically Kevin and AJ) raved about just how fucking great Prince was, the more it piqued my interest. Then I heard "Let's Go Crazy" on the 80's flashback hour on the radio. This "Prince" guy was fucking great! I mentioned all this to a friend. She, having no fucking clue, asked her dad who Prince was. He rented Purple Rain, and sat us down to watch it. That Christmas, among my presents from their family was the Purple Rain CD. And there she stands. Wow. Yeah, that tops everyone's, I think. I had no idea you got into Prince so recently. Yeah. Fairly recently, I guess. It was just a few weeks before my 16th birthday when I saw Purple Rain for the first time with my friend and her dad, and now I'll be 20 in less than a week. In those four years I've gone from not recognizing anything that didn't get regular airplay on the local Top 40 station, to being a steady music junkie. But I still love BSB, that's not going to to change for anything. First musical loves, and all that. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

That Christmas, among my presents from their family was the Purple Rain CD. And there she stands. That actually confirms what I believed a few years back. I remember watching some BSB special on MTV and Kevin mentioning Prince as one of his favorites. I knew that that would spark an interest in the lil'man for someone. Cool story meow85. Thanks. I think people can easily forget that pop acts can have more influence on their young fans than just encouraging 12 year olds to dress like hookers and wiggle their asses. Granted a boyband is an unorthodox way to be introduced to Prince, but if it works, why argue? And to their credit; BSB's got a habit of doing some very unboyband-y things and not bothering to hide it from impressionable young fans. After the sight of Kevin in his manskirts, any given two of them being cuddly enough to be mistaken for a couple, and frank public discussions of exactly what body parts AJ's got pierced -who's surprised they're Prince fans, really? I'd like to thank myself for seeing the purple light . I first saw the purple light when i saw a promo on bet for some movie called "under the cherry moon"in '96. I had no idea what the movie was about so i asked my parents. My dad then told me that when it came out in '86 (i was one) it bombed commercially . I was disappointed cuz i thought the movie looked cool . my dad told me not to waste my time. I watched and recorded it anyways and i've been a purple funkateer ever since . How can I live 4 love? I'm calling!!!

1st and foremost is my friend from grammar school Eric Martin, who KNEW all about the purple man way before most people I know. I was really really into him. I went to my first P concert with him. We lost touch after HS and then got reaquainted later on in my early 20's and then drifted again. He may actually be on one of these boards. I can't imagine him not being a fan anymore. 2nd is my friend Mark who ended a long P hiatus in my life and got me back on the P (also the first time I recognized Ballad of D Parker and 3rd word Be Derek, who, during a night of P conversation (he's a huge fan) found out I had no idea about unreleased recordings and took me to his apt and played for me Little Girl Wendy's Parade and There's other's here with us. I have never been the same. Thank you Eric, Mark and Derek...for showing me the way to the P. OMG!!! B-O-B Spanish and backwards, same muthafuckin' shit....Is that You????? I hardly ever post here (some might say I'm a lurker) but ya just made me spit out my coffee when I saw that u thanked me! Thanks, I wish u lived closer, I gotta lot more unreleased stuff since those days, but hopefully some orgers are takin' care of ya since then. Hope you're well! BTW, I alwyas loved that you have Jerry Blank for your avatar, litttle did I know it was you!!!! I gotta thank my uncle for playing Soft and Wet when I was nine and my best friend for playing the 1999 album for me over the phone when we were 15. Most of all, I gotta thank Andrew/theblueangel who took me from being a Prince cynic to being a true purple pole smoker. I love you, bluey.

I only have 2 thank the guy @ WB who decided that Prince would do the Batman soundtrack.
Being a 12 years-old so-called "bat-maniac" at the time, i had 2 buy it, & that's when i fell in love with Prince's music, since i actually had NEVER heard such CRAZY, WEIRD & NON-CONVENTIONNAL songs b4. I guess that's what led me 2 listen 2 xperimental japanese electro 16 years later
