Thank the person/people who helped you see the Purple Light

I want to take this opportunity to thank a few people that got me into Prince, cuz if it wasn't for them, I probably wouldn't be here.

1st and foremost is my friend from grammar school Eric Martin, who KNEW all about the purple man way before most people I know. I was really really into him. I went to my first P concert with him. We lost touch after HS and then got reaquainted later on in my early 20's and then drifted again. He may actually be on one of these boards. I can't imagine him not being a fan anymore.

2nd is my friend Mark who ended a long P hiatus in my life and got me back on the P (also the first time I recognized Ballad of D Parker

and 3rd word Be Derek, who, during a night of P conversation (he's a huge fan) found out I had no idea about unreleased recordings and took me to his apt and played for me Little Girl Wendy's Parade and There's other's here with us. I have never been the same.

Thank you Eric, Mark and Derek...for showing me the way to the P.

Someone had purple Kool Aid for breakfast. biggrin

I'd like to thank the Org.

I was a solitary P fanatic most of my life, and I stumbled upon this site in 2001. I was over the moon to have found a bunch of freaks who were more Prince obsessed than I was (at the time, I thought I counted as "obsessed" just because I owned nearly every officially released album. Ah, naivete... lol)

I've made so many friends, learned so much about Prince and his music, and been turned on to so much amazing music, Prince and non-Prince.

Thanks, fuckers. mr.green

Well, that would be me. I was the first Prince fan I knew. I got my friend Amber into him when I was in junior high and we'd dance around her bedroom to Never Take the Place of Your Man and swim around in her pool to Alphabet Street.
Then, somewhere around "My Name is Prince, and I am Funky" I lost my groove. I just wasn't having it. Sure, I loved the stuff I already loved. But Arms of Orion really was getting on my nerves at this point.
Fast-forward to my early 20's and I come across endorphin74. I was at a house party of his, had met him a few times, we had mutual friends, but didn't know each other well. We're both on the dance floor and Forever In My Life kicks in. I'm SURE this was a test of his. Anyway, as the floor clears out a bit, there's me and him, singin' along and when he realized I was singin' the second part note for note, word for word. The look on his face was PRICELESS. Somewhere around 3am he pulled out the Lovesexy video and he and I pulled up a couch and talked till the wee hours of the morning as the party wound down. A few months later he calls me on the phone to ask if I wanna go with him and friends to see the Jam of the Year tour. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Patti and Diana!

Back in the 7th grade they were the only two cool chicks in the middle school. They would dress with flourescent clothing and jelly shoes and would talk about all things 80s: Wham, MTV, Madonna etc etc...

For some reason I ended up sitting with them in the lunch room right around the time Prince was to play in nearby Las Cruces. At this point, thanks to my stoner father, I had already experienced many concerts, all mostly metal: Krokus, Motley Crue, Dio,Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Triumph (this was my first lazer show), Aerosmith, Kiss (still with makeup) with the Plasmatics opening up.

So, I fancied myself a "rocker" and during my lunch sesssions with Patti and Diana I would make it a point to make fun of "Prince" and all things pop. But, as the show rolled around and the intensity of big event (El Paso/Las Cruces had not seeing a major star in quite awhile) grew it was all Patti and Diana talked about. So, I casually asked my father if he could see about getting me a ticket because (I lied) I wanted to take this girl named Diane. He didn't know I was gay then, though I'm sure he suspected, and after a few phone calls secured me a ticket.

I went to the show and since the opening lines of "Let's Go Crazy," when the entire arena starting raining with flowers I was hooked...

Prince! The longest relationship in my life...

Prince was not played on the radio around
here so the only time I saw/heard Prince was on Casey Kasem's top forty show.
1999 was #1 on the RnB charts so he showed the video.
I bought the album after seeing the video.
So thanks Casey Kasem!!

As for me, I will first have to thank my sisters. They are older than me and were really into Prince when I was younger. Surprisingly, they started with 1999 and immediately bought all of his older material- so by 3rd grade I knew all the words to Dirty Mind.

I fell into Prince thanks to them. But THEN, my cousin helped push it to obsession. He gave me a bootleg of The Black Album, he taught me about 12" vinyls, he gave me a bootleg with cristal ball/camille/choclate album material and he introduced me to a wrecka stow (Flipside Records) which used to be in St Paul- they had all the fun stuff, Japaneese Imports, colored vinyl, etc. Thanks to him my allowance was no longer buying comic books, it was now all going to Prince.

My sisters made a comeback by taking me to the LoveSexy show. If there was any chance of my NOT being an addict, that show destroyed it.

Of course my fandom has been helped through the years by Vi and CarrieMpls and now all you ka-razy cats here.

GOOD STUFF!
