PURPLE RAIN_OVERRATED?? i personally think PURPLE RAIN is the most overrated PRINCE song EVER!!
its definitely not the best song he ever released and im still baffled as to `why this album is so highly acclaimed ?? its not in my top 5 !! why wouldnt dirty mind,1999,or even sign o the times have that sort of recognition>.? in my eyes ,they were much better albums << [Edited 3/25/05 3:36am] "isnt she great? ooh ye i wanna bust dat body "

interesting perspective ... i hear where you are coming from ... and i - not the biggest MJ fan would say the same thing about "thriller" ... lol
honestly tho - i think Purple Rain - with the "hit movie" , hot album ... was kinda a pinnacle ... and people relate to that ... (when i say people - i mean the casual fan - not your avg orger !) it has some mystery to it ... ("what the hell is purple rain anyhow??) ... and it just connected with his fans at that time ... i actually think PR --- as an album ...is the only Prince album with NO FILLER ... if he had stuck "god" , "another lonely christmas", "shes always in my hair" ... "17 days " ... and some of the other "songs " he had when he orig made a double album --- i think it woulda had some filla ...

I don't think the album is that great...I'm proud of it's recognition, but I don't know if it necessarily deserves it. Of course, this is coming from someone who really appreciates one of the 80's albums (Parade), and likes mostly 90's albums. (Although I respect all the 80s albums, and there are at least 2 or 3 songs I like off of each.)

Purple Rain is what got me into Prince and it remains one of my favourite albums.
I don't undertand why "a true fan" should bash anything commercially succesful Prince has ever done. The stuff was succesful because it was good. spelling edit [Edited 3/25/05 6:39am] =)

not quite. Once upon a time I wouldn't have agreed with that but I now I do. From hearing bootlegs from the 1982-1985 period alone, Prince was in an unstoppable groove and I know he would have done something to catch the mainstream's eye in one way or another. Having said that, Purple Rain should always get props because it's an incredible album that has really stood the test of time IMHO. It's an album that still has the world's attention just as it did in 1984. If any musician wants to crossover, this is one of the albums to use a reference on how to do it and do it right. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

EVERYONE was open 2 the greatness of Prince my favorite P albums are... Dirty Mind Controversy and 1999 but.. Purple Rain is what got people 2 go out and listen 2 those albums a bit more.. believe me.. Prince was kickin it WAY before Purple Rain...but without Purple Rain....who knows.... maybe he becomes Rick James..... We will NEVER know....but Purple Rain is what started the Purple Reign

some nerd like ESCOBAR who claims he started listening to prince in batman doesnt have the right perspective to judge or say anything interesting about the 80s.
more rubish as a thread, escobar!

I couldn't dissagree anymore. PR is Prince's best album. Every song on that
is a classic at the height of his creativity. The only bad thing I can say about the album is that there isn't enough songs on it.(9) I don't understand why people on this site have a hard time dealing with various peoples opinions. It's Ok to like or dislike things that other people do/don't.

i have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to Purple Rain(the song)
imho the rest of the album is classic and to this day still sounds really fresh. There isnt a bad song on Purple Rain tis the closest thing to perfection. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

No way is purple Rain overrated!!! that is without a doubt the best prince album evr. nothing he evr did before that or aftter evr came close to magic of PR.every song on that cd is great(except for "Take me with You") the only complaint i have is that the other songs from the movie weren't included(like "Jungle Love, Sex Shooter" etc.) "Americans consume the most fast food than any nation on Earth and the stupid motherfuckers wonder why they are so fat? If anything, 1999 is more underrated than PR is overrated. CALL ME A DREAMER 2!

It just happen to be that Purple Rain was the next album and with the album a movie.

Purple Rain is prince's tightest album. Song for song it's one of the strongest albums in rock history as far as I'm concerned; all killer no filler. BUT, if you're looking for a more raw, edgy sound, the three albums before that are better, even if they border closer to the "80s cheese sound" than purple rain does. If you're looking for the more psychedelic, eclectic, retro-panoramic sound, his next three are better, but Purple Rain is the transition between those two "trilogies" and for me, is the perfect middle ground between the styles of the periods preceeding and following it. Plus it's one of the only albums that was simultaneously highly commercially successful and artistically accomplished. Even Sgt. Pepper, as great as it was, was somewhat compromised for mass appeal in comparison to Revolver, same analogy between Thriller and Off The wall or any number of other commercial peaks by great artists.
