I just watched one of my Controversy shows again and he said something during "UPTOWN" that had me rollin:

BABY DIDN'Y SAY TOO MUCH, SHE SAID "ARE YOU GAY?"
THEY KINDA TOOK ME BY SUPRISE I DIDN'Y KNOW WHAT TO DO
I JUST LOOKED HER IN HER EYES AND I SAID "NO IS YO MAMA:!

I know Prince was aiming for a laugh there but so what it was still funny.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "Baby Knows," the part where he says "She'll make you feel like your stuff ain't brown." Prince is a prime example of someone who can write the coolest songs as well as some that fall flat on their faces.

His rapping part in Push...or any song he raps in for that matter. (except maybe for P Control and a scant few others)

"Snatching up kiddies like a circus clown, indeed."

If the problem with rappers, as Prince says, stems from them being tone deaf, then the problem with Prince is that he is rap deaf.

y'see, prince's problem...usually stems from bein' rap deaf
pack the club, try to spit...there won't be no one left

I think all the "unintentionally" funny stuff Prince has done was intentional. Prince has got a good sense of humour about himself, when it gets down to it.

Ok stop.... Listen to yourself... If you are going to find humor in a Prince song... Please, AT LEAST. get the lyrics right....

First of all it's: I'll do ya, do ya like a GOOD man should
Nothing funny there.

BUT. try this one on for size:
"Like a strawberry, fender jazz, mash potato fuzz tone all over Ur thighs"
WHAT THE HELL?

nuts

the video's even funnier, with robin power in that outfit and motorcycle helmet...

robin power in general was unintentionally funny. what ever happened to her?

remember that part in GB when she's doing that dance for morris with the thong and the strobe light? that was frickin' hilarious for no reason.

and she was rapping over the elephants and flowers beat... falloff i was like wtf?

and i still cried at the end. sad

As cold as her body was...I don't think I could take that loud mouth of hers, at least not without sporting a pair of earmuffs everytime she started talking.

Some belgian artist, well known in erm.....belgium and Holland, called Raymond van het Groenewoud, once said: "There is lots of humor in Prince music". I read that in 1992 i guess, and never thougt about that before....

But with that thought in mind, i started to listen to Prince definitely and he was right, Prince work is full of humor, and i think its often intentionally to lighten things up a bit, or to put an absurd twist to a song:

To name a few moments that show Princes humor (intionally or not), i name:
- The horn parts Eric Leeds plays on Girls and Boys, combined with that silly french accent Prince uses, always puts a smile on my face
- The Whole Black Album, its dark, creepy and funny the same time, Prince shows that he isnt taking things to seriously on this record, but that makes this record even more exciting.... (a lot of the Camille tracks had that same kind of quality, mixing darkness with humor)
- My name is Prince: this is an over the top self-referential Funk song, a Parody on the 'image' of Prince, artist likes James Brown and many rappers do this kind of name-calling all the time, Prince uses it in a way to get rid off the old, WB Prince-image, and take over the Symbol-name (he uses this kind of selfparodying arrogange again on Style from Emancipation)
- At the end of Zannalee you hear Prince say: "get out of my way, you big ass" and you hear Mayte giggle...
- Get Off (the song and the video) are of course creating an 'over the top'-image of Prince as some sexfreak, and he knows it, he just plays around with it a bit, for fun (same goes with the assless pants he wear during an award show, were he performed this song)
- Even on a record that way too serious and demagogic for me lyricwise, The Rainbow children that is, there is one part thats funny and enlightening.. Near he end of The everlasting Now you hear some geezer with a high voice say "Whats wrong with this old squigglehead, he doesnt play his music like he did before" (or something like that..), after that you hear a slapping sound, and the geezer saying 'ouch'....
