Overall, I definitely like it. Yet another musical side to the man. Some parts I love, other parts I'm not really into.

I would, however, say that Kamasutra doesn't do anything for me at all but I would have to say both C-Note and Xpectation edge it over NEWS for me.

It's not horrible (there's definitely worse music out there...), but I never listen to it anymore. I just don't care enough about it to bother pulling it out of the CD rack.

Overall: blah album.

I like NEWS a lot. I am sure a lot of u could listen to Coltrane or Miles and dismiss their work as crap also. Your reaction to NEWS has much more to do with your on expectations and limitations than the actual music itself. There are many works that I didn't appreciate as a youth that I love now (its called maturation). Some of u will eventually like it years down the road, some wont. That's life.

God,you're always so dead on with your responses/posts.
Love it as well and appreciate it for what it is...

Anyone complaining that it would've been fine as an internet-only release but sucks as a properly released album is freaking altered -- forget about how it was released and just decide whether or not you like the music, eh? It's touted as "new directions in music" so of course it's different from other Prince releases. I rank it higher than most of Rave and NPS, that's for sure.

Well, I hear you, but I'm complaining about it being released because the music is bad to me.

I have no problem with a totally different kind of Prince sound.

Hell, I ADORE The Sensual Everafter.

It's just that NEWS bores the hell out of me. People can say what they will about me not "getting" the album or not being ready for it, but that just sounds like a silly excuse to me.

The album doesn't take me in any interesting direction, and is just kind of "there."

ome people like everything he does.

Fuckin fams.

I could technically say the same thing to you in a thread where ppl talk about how they like the Batman album. Kind of a silly thing to base that argument on though, no? Some ppl in here really genuinely just do enjoy NEWS. It doesn't make 'em fams.

OK -- now THAT makes sense.

No judgement -- and I won't sit here and say that I'm completely enthralled with every second of sound on NEWS. But, there is brilliance in the mix. Parts of "West" are true bliss. There's a heaviness to parts of "East" that you just don't find on a lot of Prince's albums. The bass and drums on "South" make me want to hear more.

To each their own...

The interesting moments on NEWS are too few and far between to me.

I would've preferred an album of really intense, experimental, short instrumental numbers instead if he wanted to go the route of an instrumental album.

I was hoping NEWS would be somewhat of an interesting extension of fascinating stuff like Sensual Everafter. I didn't think it'd be so tame overall.

2nd track is amazing, after all the fake keyboard sounds..

I understand. Just sounds like a harsh opinion to fuck a group of people for liking music. If they were killing children or crapping in a cemetary it would be different.

Crapping on your mothers grave = Liking N.E.W.S. from start to finish ?

Anyway, I see the point that some people will give a new Prince album five freaking stars before the plastic wrap comes off the jewel case. But, they're happy and smiling and enjoying their tunes...I guess the question is did they take the blue pill or the red pill, and what difference does it make if it was their decision?

I've only listened to it a couple of times while going to sleep at night-- honestly. It doesn't start out too strong I guess because I've never gotten past the first couple of minutes. smile Now that I'm without my television for a while maybe I'll devote a few waking moments to it.

The key to liking anything of course is wanting to like it. With some things it takes work and persistence-- i.e. Parade or better yet TRC. Since that's my outlook going in I'll probably find something to like. Hell, I could sit through Kamasutra or NPS if I had to.
