chaos n disorder hated ?

i Obtained a copy of CHAOS N DISORDER a few years back when i was starting to really obsess over prince (at the time id never heard ANYTHING pre Batman) and Rainbow Children was my fave @ the time (heh heh).i fell in love with this album.songs like ZANALEE,DIG U BETTER DEAD,RIGHT THE WRONG,I ROCK,THEREFORE I AM (OK,i admit the rapping in it is pretty annoying, but thats it ..!!! ) and CHAOS AND DISORDER rocked my world for a while there.i went back to this album 2 nite after being exposed to 78-88 prince and i love the album more now than ever!!!whats the deal on this 1?ive noticed its not really a favorite with fans

Well, I've always loved it to be honest.

There are a number of people here who don't (though, all the critics seem to like it - Q magazine gave this album 11/10!), but I'm not sure if its the music they disagree with or the intention with which the album was put out. Its an album that is generally viewed as "contractual filler" and apparently Prince himself said that this was the purpose of this album. Some fans took this as Prince playing "rope-a-dope" with his own fanbase and not being too impressed by this.

I don't care why he released it - it rocks for the most part!

Hey fartman!

Glad you like the album but "his 90s dirty mind"?????!!!!!

Dirty Mind was a radical departure, a brave release and a groundbreaking album - the same cannot be said for C&D! Outside of the 80's, Prince did not acheive these 3 attributes until TRC!

i think most of the people who say they hate this album haven't really given it a chance. i think it's some of his most adventurous work from the '90s. it's an angry album and the cover art sends off some seriously bad juju (not to mention it had 'bargain bin' written all over it from the get-go), so i can understand why people might find it hard to love...but it's got some true gems once you give it a chance.

i know this is sacrilege to some, but as a whole, i like this album better than the gold experience.

well explained. the cover alone is disturbing. when it first came out, i liked it enough to keep it, but over the years, i've grown to appreciate it more. brotha made a left turn at albuquerque with this album, and made people scratch they heads. pretty ballsy in my opinion.

I don't hate it, but it's far from my favorite. I like about 3 songs: I Rock, Therefore I am," "Zanalee" and "I Will"
I don't think it's his worst.

ye i agree w/mindflux,,its not groundbreaking but it is a change in direction,,its an angry album,,its got so much feeling ,,the statement that it was released as part of a contractual agreement.isnt it a collection of material recorded over a few years and compiled on to one disc ,,kinda like the vault ??

It's an enjoyable trip!
I like the CD even though it contains my least fave song of all his songs - which is "Right the Wrong".

Even though it was a "contract obligation" release, it was still fun to see him promote it with the free concert and an appearance on David Letterman.
"All of me eye give 2 thee down at your feet ...
The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me."

I also like this album.
The faster songs are pretty good and "dinner with delores" and "into the light" are still two of my favourites...

The story is, as far as I remember (and not being an owner of DMSR boxed - although I do have Per Nielsen's first book!) that Prince was basically rehearsing with the NPG in LA and the sessions went so well that he released them. Apparently, few overdubs were required over the meat of the songs and it probably is more the NPG's moment than Prince's - soooo tight smile

That's basically it. Several of those songs were around in different form before this, but he preferred the versions from these sessions. They were all recorded in 1995.
