Does any1 know who the drummers were in the Revolution ??for parade ,purple rain ie darling nikki,and controversy
and who playd the beats on the black album,parade ,lovesexy,and sign o the times?(i know prince always does most of the beats himself but..)
was it shiela E ?

The only drummer for the Revolution was Bobby Z - not a great drummer, but perfectly capable and certainly fitted with what Prince ostensibly required at that time (in terms of music and image).

After the revolution dis-banded, Prince used Sheila E in places on SOTT and particularly on Lovesexy. Anything else is either Prince playing or programming the beats.

Darling Nikki is Prince, Purple Rain is Bobby Z, Controversy I think is a Linn drum machine. Parade was a mixture of Bobby Z, Prince and Sheila E. Hope that helps

Erm, correction! The Linn drum machine (the original LM1) was released in 1979. Not only that, it is rumuoured that Prince was sent a prototype version and was the first to use the drum machine on record.

That's well in time for Controversy.

I don't think the Linn Drum appears on anything recorded before 1999, What Time Is It, or Vanity 6.

Does anyone know what the first track that P used the Linn drum on, then???

And, I don't mean to be pedantic, but you are aware that the LM1 and the Linndrum are 2 entirely different machines (the Linndrum was the uprated version and did not appear until 1983).

I'm pretty sure Annie Christian was done on the LM1 - could be wrong though!

wan't the Linn credited on For You - haven't dragged it out in ages, but i thought 4 sure that was one of the "27"

One of the very first drum machines created. Prince's most obvious Linndrum tune is When Doves Cry.

Private Joy was the first song he recorded the LINN on....trust me, I'm a Linn nerd.

yup - been playing for some 25-some years now. Bet your new kit is a joy

Got no probs with electric kits - whatever you need to get the sound you want, in my book. Use a saucepan if that's gonna give you the tone you require - hehe!

For my money, I'm not sure that spending so much on the Roland kit is really necessary. They do great kits, no question, but a fair chunk of that money is going on the "brain" or sound module. These days, good quality midi-trigger pads should be all that you need. Hook them up to your pc and get them to trigger any .wav or sample file you want - in other words, havy any kit you ever wanted!

Seriously, software does it so good these days, there's little or no point spending the money on the hardware. All my music is generated using software synths and VSTs in cubase - and you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference on the finished track that I wasn't using, say, a genuine Korg Wavestation. Of course, I am using it, just not the hardware version!. I recently bought the Korg Legacy kit (software VST synths) - you get a Korg Wavestation, MS-20 and a polysix!!! All for a fraction of the cost of buying the actual hardware and they're exactly the same!!! Plus, you get the Korg Legacy, a keyboard that only exists on your pc and is basically the aforementioned synths patched together, so that you can produce entirely new, never-before-heard sounds

So, check out some options before you spend those readies - you just might save yourself a few thousands buck and have far more sounds on the end of your stick-tips than you ever imagined

ye..ure info is very helpful..thanx ,,im thinking mayb go with somethin like the pad john blackwell uses in the live in vegas dvd ,,u know,it generates claps etc .would this be a suitable option as well?obviously a lot cheaper ..im only new to this side of music so ure input is invaluable ,,.,..

Haha - yes!

The LM1 is often referred to as a Linn drum machine (which, technically it is) but, as I said before, if you want to be wholly accurate there is a distinction between the LM1 and the Linndrum.

Fact is he was using it first and it was on the Controversy.
