Explaining 2young ones..

Tge 80's is a decade that will be harder to explain to our children than any other previous decade.

Well I plan to have kids, but just can't figure out how am I gonna explain Prince to the little guys.

THen we've got Michael Jackson and Madonna to conversate about.

I'm young (14) and I just took the the 80's music like a fish to water...I think it's really an acquired taste, and you need to have a kid who is not afraid to be different and like something other than whatever is mainstream. Too many people my age are biased and superficial because they feel insecure about exploring something other than what the "crowd" likes. Maybe if we had less people worried about reputations and how they are viewed in other peoples lives, then more of 80's music would still be alive. I don't believe this will happen, however, because society is way too stereotypical when it comes to topics such as this.

when i was around the age of 13-15, just about all i listened to was '60s music. beatles, janis and jimi were my favorites. there was some current stuff i liked - eurythmics, culture club, michael jackson, and of course prince - but most of the top 40 middle-of-the-road pop music just didn't have anything to do with my interests. i think when you grow up around good music from your parents' generation, it's easier for you to separate the good stuff from the crap. i was lucky to grow up with a big collection of old records to enjoy.

Yes--that's how it is with my parents--tons of records and cd's that got me into music. I think kid's today who don't have parents like that may just latch onto whatever popular, so that may be the problem. (parents)

It was a time when everbody could dress absolutely ANY way they wanted. It was also a time when R&B music was at it's finest, too.

But, nowadays when you look back at some of the music videos and movies/shows from 80s (Vh1's 'I Love The 80s'), you realize how fuckin corny they were.

Well like RazzBeret said, Im 15 and I perfer 80's music and New Jack Swing (90's) well over this pre packaged "crunk" music. Kids today usually listen to whatever's on MTV and BET and don't have the slightest clue of what their singing about. I feel so sorry for the little ones (ages 3,4,5 etc) that watch these networks and start singing "Bust a ***** head, slap a ho, shoot the club up" So yes it's gonna be hard to introduce a different style of music (80's) like Prince, Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, etc. to them and not get a "out of this world" comment, believe me, I've been there thousands of times.

I've got a son (10) and a daughter (6). I try to play a bit of everything for them -- from Gregorian Chant to Jimmy Smith to Squarepusher -- and let them make up their own minds. My son gravitates to rap and techno while my daughter just came home from a sleepover and declared her admiration of Brittney Spears. shake You try to raise them right.....

However, there is hope. The boy started borrowing some 60's and 70's rock albums from me. And the girl got hooked on Heatwave. She also took over one of my multiple copies of Musicology. In fact, she's played it so much that she has actually worn out the album for me. I could really die happy never hearing it again since it's been on repeat play in her stereo since this time last year.

Bottom line is, you don't have to explain a thing. Let the music speak for itself. They'll figure it out in their own time.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I was in elemetary school all through the 80's so the 80's meant nothing to me but, the 90's on the other hand was a comming of age time for me and music was
a nessesity.

fluid - when you have kids you won't have to really explain Prince to them. They'll just figure it out on their own. My daughter grew up listening to Prince and said she hated it, but now she's now 21 and has stolen some of my P c.d.'s, but would never admit it. Today's pop music seems so "manufactured".
Just don't screw up like I did. I used to joke with my friends who knew I was in love with P. that he was my daughters' father (quite the joke since my daughter and I are very pale, blonde, and have blue/green eyes) When she was getting screened for kindergarten they were testing her knowledge and asked her fathers name. I was shocked when instead of saying my husband (her fathers') name she said "Prince". eek I had no idea she ever heard me joke about it! She's fine now tho, I think!
Eventually every cloud runs out of rain.

Oh how I long for the day my children will ask questions and say things like like "Daddy, why is that man crawling out of that bath tub?","Daddy, why do people think that black man surrounded by the finest women on earth is a gay filipino?" or "Look daddy, the Joker can do the splits!" and most importantly "Daddy, why weren't Adore or Housequake realeased as singles?"

My kid likes to play with dog poop. Of course, he's only two. At that age, the simplest of things are interesting.

P.S. - We highly discourage him from playing with the poop and intervene whenever possible. It's not like he has a bedroom full of poop that we just let him play with all willy nilly!

P.S.S. - I may be the first ORGer to use the term "willy nilly" in a post. Excellent!

It was a marketing ploy to get him to be seen as fem as possible to get him into white homes and seem non threatening to white parents. Because the more fem he seemed the safer he seemed to those parents. Now that is just an theory that you don't have believe but that is the way I feel about it. I lived through the 80's and that is the way it was. No very Hetro seeming black man made the kind of money that Prince went on to make. If so then can anyone name him.
