Yeah but I dont think it's as valid because it isnt from the same time frame with allof the wlements of the zeitgeist from THAT time, so its an unfair assessment imho

Us older people will consistantly dislike new things for one reason or another. If I had been a Prince fan since day one I may have become disillusioned when Lovesexy or Batman came out, or maybe even ATWID,

Raises hand..thats me to a T. I hated ATWIAD and even Purple Rain after discovering the aural pleasure of 1999.

but since most of my Prince listening was done in retrospect I was able to take each recording as a peice of the big picture.

I looked back in retropsective and with the grace of a certain internet faction and came to appreciate that which I thought sucked at the time..ATWIAD, Parade etc.So there is hope for the ones who were there when the rain fell.

It wasn't until TRC that I began to lose faith, and I wouldn't say it's gone yet.

Sheeeeit---if anything TRC should give u hope. Sure its not 1999 part two etc etc but its Prince being inspired...and its him doing his weird shit thats off center which is what he used to do...this is a precursor of good things to come..it shows him getting his faith back in himself and his abilies..trusting his own instincts again and not worrying about chart positions, other songwriters etc.He used this as a forum to release what is currently inspiring him and now he isnt afraid to go all out sans religious dogma..he got it all out of his system for the most part on TRC. The next official (not npgmc club ) release is gonna be the shit. Watch.

I can see what you are saying, and understand it, but I think what you're saying only applies to certain things. Like if you asked people where they were when they found out President Kennedy was shot. Of COURSE you can be "born too late" for that, but not for music. It's timeless.

Besides, I didn't even know who Prince was at the time. I heard the song with unadulterated ears, just as most of you did. Sure he made it semi-big with 1999, but when Purple Rain came out, that's when EVERYBODY started noticing him. When I first heard WDC, I had never even heard of Purple Rain, let alone Prince. And that's when I started getting into him - after WDC - despite the fact that it was 15 years later.
I mean, like, where is the sun?

See I agree, I was listening to the pop radio "Q102" (lol) starting when I was about 5 which was 1983. (The first album I got was Wham! Make it Big.) So I had heard, and liked "Delerious", "Little Red Corvette" and "1999" but it was WDC that turned me into a Prince fan. Every song, every note, everything about that album blew me away.

Let me say also that this is one of the best threads ever. I really feel like printiting it and hanging it on the wall, as proof of what Prince has meant to so many of us. All from totally different places (I'm sounding sappy, arrggh shoot me)

As far as "faith" and the "TRC" thing, I guess rdhull is sorta right, because at least Prince is doing exactally what he wants to do, but honestly after I got that album, everytime I hear old Prince songs I thinkn "what the hell happened?" Truly, that's what I think.

I Remember where I was when I saw the Video first come on
M-TV,
At my friends house playing checkers late at night.
My senior year in H.S (Class of 84!)
couldn't have been better!
all My boys used to get on me about Prince
And that year everybody liked him!
Even they did. Now they still do;)
At my HS reunion everyone would ask
"you still listen to Prince?"
Nobody had the guts to admit they
did until then!!
We all want a big hit again because
we want to relive the Hysteria & Pandemonium we experienced
when Purple Rain was Hot. Actually, he doesn't care if it happens again or not.

Great topic!
Cause of that song that I'm talkin to ya'll. So, it's 1984and I'm 13 years old, sitting in the car. Majic 102 in Houston announced that they were gonna play the new song from Prince. At the time I didn't really follow Prince that much, but they'd been playing 17 Days on the radio, and I really respected how musically clever that song was, so I was intrigued.

After that opening guitar lick, I officially lost my freaking mind! The song was absolutely like nothing I'd ever heard before. Once the song ended, that was it for me. I was hooked and I knew it. Went to school the next day preachin' the gospel of Prince (no sacrilege intended). Man, I remember thinking after hearing WDC that I'd still be listening to Prince in 20 years if he was still making music. Too scary.

I was in my bedroom getting ready to go to my new gig in Sears Tower. It came on the radio - the now defunct WJPC in Chicago. I remember not liking it that much. I heard it again when my boyfriend picked me up later that evening. I still wasn't feelin' it!

But a few days later, I saw the video!! I was hooked like a fish in Lake Minnetonka! I guess I needed a visual to fully get me there!!

cool

I remember it perfectly: Back in 1984 I listened to the "top 10 at 10" on G105 out of Raleigh, NC every night. All spring, "The Reflex" by Duran Duran had been number one because lots of girls at NC State called in to vote for it. Then one night in late May, the dj told everyone to stick around for the countdown because a new song had snatched the top spot. I couldn't even imagine what it might be.

Finally, after playing the top nine songs (including "The Reflex" at number 2), the dj announced that "When Doves Cry" was the top vote getter of the night and started the song. I had never heard it before and I was stunned. It sounded so different, so minimalist. I didn't even feel like it was finished to be honest. After the song ended, I couldn't even decide if I liked it or not. It was just so unique.

Needless to say, I quickly grew to love "When Doves Cry" (thank god since it dominated the airwaves all summer). And the rest is history.

Peace, David

MTV.
I heard the guitar riff and spun around. The credits read "Prince and the Revolution" on the screen. I was locked in.
I was only aware of Prince from "Little Red Corvette", "1999", and "Sexuality", and I was intrigued.
I saw the movie before I bought the album. It was all over after "The Beautiful Ones" and worse by "Computer Blue". I was in for the duration. My poor girlfriend. I was 18 at the time. She had no idea that going to a movie on a Saturday Night would have such a dramatic effect and that this music would soon inundate the air that I lived in.
That was '84. By the time "Around The World In A Day" came out in 85, I'd already gone through '1999, Controversy", Dirty Mind', "Prince", "For You" and assorted singles and b-sides.

I must state that I was already a Prince fan so I was looking forward to hearing the song.

Over here (in australia) in the 70's and 80's there was a famous pop show called Countdown that played clips every Sunday night. The host, Molly Meldrum, introduced the clip and gave it huge hype as he loved Prince.

My first impressions were that it was very strange and very unlike 1999. I was impressed though as it "stuck". The more I heard it the more I liked it.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

I was a high schooler at the time, and I remember I was in my room at home, on the phone with my best friend, with the radio on in the background. I heard the drums and immediately knew it was Prince. I said to my friend "oh my god, there's a new Prince song out" and turned it up. He said "yeah, I heard it earlier today, I hate it." But he hated Prince, period, so that was no surprise. I, of course, was immediately taken with it. It was completely different than anything I'd ever heard, yet unmistakably Prince. That was the moment I went from fan to fanatic.

Good memories.
