SIGN O' THE TIMES

I know that back in 1987 CD technology wasn't what it is now... (I.E.: how much could be stored on one single disc.)

Now when Sign O' The Times was released, it was released as a two disc set due to the amount of music it contained (a similar thing happened to the initial pressing of **1999**, as most of you may know.)

Well, I was wondering why Sign O' The Times was never rereleased as a single disc album (in America, anyways; It was released as a single disc in Japan..I would have ordered it, but I am not paying nearly $20 to mail a CD from Japan to Texas, plus the actual cost of the CD.)!! The album contains exactly 80 minutes (and three seconds) of music, and any CD can hold that amount of music nowadays. (they can just edit out a few seconds of silence to make it an even 80.)

I believe that Warner (or somebody) should have done this. I mean, if it was good enough for **1999**, it's good enough for SOTT, too, damnit!

I think a single disc version of the album would just really be überconvenient for everyone!!

So yes, I think this is something that needs to become a reality.

Actually, 1999 was NEVER released as two disc set. However, it was released sans DMSR because of the limited space availability on CD's when the format was first introduced. DMSR was added back on once the format could accomodate more material.

The Japanese release only looks like it is a single disc but it is actually two discs in a modern slimline two CD jewel case. I bought a copy.

I understand that it's a bit risky to cram so much information on a single disc. Error's crop up when a disc exceeds 79 minutes which is why you never see a commercial release exceed that amount of time.

CDR's handle the encoding slightly differently, which is why you can cram both discs from Sign O' The Times onto one 80 minute CDR.

Good point about 1999 being released as a CD without DMSR. I almost forgot about that. I remember because I almost bought a copy without DMSR. Later, when the track was added back, I bought it.

Does anyone know if the European version if 1999 (which included How Come U Don't Call ME) ever released on CD?

Both are true. But I didn't know that there were 2 cd's in the single jewel case for SOTT, and I just saw it earlier this week. They should make all double cd jewel cases like that to take up less space. Thanks for the info.

That's what I was talking about. I have a copy of the version without DMSR.

That's how my SOTT came; in a "normal" jewel case with a double sided disc tray that "flips" out.

The 1999 album was released on CD in Europe, but it doesn't feature "How come.." I didn't even know the Euro release ever even contained the song! Wow eek

Do you mean the single-album version of 1999? It is not out on CD and does not contain How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore).
