Rave DVD

So I just bought the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 DvD and I must
admit I love it so far!
I've heard alot of people dis it so I wanna know what Im missing?
What's so bad about it? (aside from the "23 scriptures"-which I can overlook)

Prince is sexy, The music is great, the visual quality is great, and everyone looks like they are having a good time!

Sure I could have done without Larry Grahm, but hey! You take the good, you take bad shrug

Someone please tell me why this is so disliked by orgers???
If you will, so will I

Probably--too many guest stars, bad rendition of "1999" for the final time, etc.
I don't know, I got a bootleg version without 1999 on it, so I'll have to buy a real one.

The editing and camera work is enough to give me a seizure. I listen to a cd I made of the concert quite a bit but I never watch it because it looks so cheap and sad and like I said the camera work and editing are probably the worst I've ever seen in a concert dvd.

Anxiety

what lovemachine said. the editing is way too choppy, the camera work is lousy, and overall i feel like i can't enjoy anything without it cutting to something else in a hot second. plus, i don't know, i just didn't like the energy of the whole thing. i much prefer the alladin DVD, even if the sound sucks on it.

I see what you guys mean about the camera stuff now (my back was to the TV)
but at least the picture is better than the Alladin DVD and yeah some of the guest stars are a bit annoying (Rosie & Larry) but I loved Morris!

I haven't gotten to the performance of 1999 yet...
If you will, so will I

ok so I don't like tracks 10, 11, 12, & 15

Damn! If I could just make Larry & Rosie disappear this would be
alot better! mad

...but I still like it! I swear lol

The editing is annoying, but the reason I don't watch it much is because there just isn't the energy and spark that come through in other performances I've seen. Any momentum is killed with the elongated Family Stone reunion section, Larry's mutilation of one of the verses of The Christ (don't get me started there!) and the rather bizaare inclusion of part of the video for TGRES. Then it wraps with the aforementioned letdown of the 1999 performance.

Less horrific -- just mildly irksome -- are the uninspired dancers flailing about, a rather flat performance by Rosie, and, of course, the presence of Kirky J. and Larry Graham.

And the audience just isn't inspired at all. Too many VIP invitees and too few true Prince party people allowed in and the few that did make it were likely limited in their enthusiasm as they tried to deal with their recovery from hypothermia brought on by waiting several hours in sub-zero weather waiting to get in.

There are some good moments. She's Always In My Hair automatically gets my attention as it's one of my favorites. The guitar on Purple House is great, it's fun to watch Prince upstage Lenny Kravitz without even meaning to and the interview at the beginning has some interesting moments. But overall it doesn't give you that same start-to-finish sense of satisfaction that SOTT, LoveSexy or even Purple Rain Live offer.
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.

I didnt really enjoy the little Family Stone reunion or any of Larry Grahmn's contributions.

Really watching it now I love tracks 1-9, and Im still looking forward
to tracks 17-23. the chunck in the center I could seriously do without sad

I really love it but I do usually skip through Lenny and Larry. Plus the girl dancer kind of freaks me out. When she's all over Prince in "She's Always In My Hair," the look on his face is priceless...it sort of says "Don't get too close honey." It's sort of the same look he gets when crazy fans dancing on stage at shows come to close to him....

The confused Look!

Oh yeah there was this one lady on the DVD...I forgot what song it was...but everyone was keeping their respective distance from the Purple one...but this lady had the balls to start sashaying over to his royle highness...but you could see her holding back as Prince was giving off the "Don't even try it, bitch" vibe. Hmmmm I'd say she wasn't really his type. lol

The bad editing.
That shiny electric blue outfit P wears during the 1999 performance. He looks like a bike reflector.
The performance of 1999 as a multi-guest sing-a-long

Those are the things that I remember disliking the most.

I loved it but those dancers were not all that great. Especially that one dude. But when P did "She's Always In My Hair", it was cool. The way he did it and the way he was groovin as soon as it started. One tight ass tune.

The second quote...I know...That was an invited moppsy girl of the audience in the bonus beats.

I noticed that too. It's verry funny and she was hrmph err

Prince kilss Lenny on American woman. he gives the boy as much stage as he wants then he gestures to lenny and asks him if he can take a solo and he just nails it! the solo includes a tiny part of a lenny tune, is it called 'mamma told me'? He plays the horn line on his guitar.

I just bought this dvd myself and I like it too. I do agree though that the editing and camera work is bad. But hey, any footage of Prince live can't really be a bad thing.rainbow

Does anyone know why he changed the name of the song "The Cross" to "The Christ"?

He believes that Jesus was not crucified on a cross, but on a stauros (sp?). So he stopped wearing a cross and stopped singing about one.

ooo my very 1st post razz

just got the Rave dvd this w/end & already watched it 3 times. Larry Graham rules! The Family Stone tribute is truly stompin ! ...all u who keep skipping over that part need 2 go get some Sly & The Family Stone cds ...then u'll find out what P (and me) already know wink

my only dismay was seeing Lenny up there eek ...now that boy just aint in the same class as any of them other musicians let alone Prince. Why P felt the need to have him in there is a complete mystery confused he looks so jerky and cumbersome, concentrating hard, staring at his fretboard, bangin out his simple 4 chord classic retro rawk. ..and Prince just plays, struts n swivels around him like musical liquid ...kinda embarrassing for poor ol LK.

loved The Time ...maurice and jerome still dancin like demons.

P.S. love this site ! you guys rule
help me i think i'm fallin

My final concensus...

I really like it! Minus the Larry Grahm factor and a few bad camera tricks
I think it was a great demonstation of P tearing up the stage
and just jamming nonstop!

thanks everybody wink
