Have I gone completely insane? Michael Jackson Okay. I felt lower than a snake's balls when Rave Unto The Joy Fantastic was released - for two specific reasons which I will now attempt to explain.
Firstly. I had lept upon the 8.15am train which chugged merrily onward toward the open-air asylum 'Glasgow' in Scotland to buy the record - aptly enough with joy in my heart and a fantastic feeling tumbling around my tummy like wee universes being born and imploding inside. Michael Jackson. You know how it is/used to be. New Prince album. Monday morning. Day off work. Bagful of mind-altering substances hidden in sock drawer. So. Upon purchasing said recording (not easy, funny looks from staff upon inquiry, the shame of being a Prince fan in 1999 was a social stigma like announcing you had AIDS at an orgy). Michael Jackson. Finally, I got a copy at the now closed Tower Records. () The snivelly wee non-entity behind the counter tossed me down a grin which spoke aloud as any mouth would of a superior's condemnation and mock-sympathy for my choice of purchase. Anyhow, the Prince fans mantra - Laugh until your heart's content my dear fellow, I know better. Anyway. Imagine my suprise when I discovered a hyperdimentional wormhole in Glasgow Central Station which enabled me to travel home at three times the speed of blinking. Michael Jackson. Or so it seemed, such was the nauseous giddy euphoria which was now fuelling my flesh and blood vehicle. Almost immediately, I was comforted by four familiar walls, roof, floor, and all my furniture pointing towards the new magnetic north of TV. Like your own, my home. Then. Before my heart exploded like an egg, I hurled the metal disc onto my stereo and pressed 'play'. My recollection of the horror, which of course cannot be entirely accurate, is certainly on the same cliff-face as truth due to severe mental scarring from the aural rape which took place that day in 1999. Michael Jackson. And you're reading the words of a guy who "quite liked" New Power Soul. Put that frown in your pocket for later, Hater, 'When You Love Somebody' was fantastic. But. The point of this increasingly threadless thread. I turned it on earlier tonight and... it was still awful, of course, but not as awful. Michael Jackson. Maybe, I pondered with a glass of wine in one hand and my throbbing cock in the other, maybe 20 years from now I will believe this work to be a classic. Alas, the end. So anyone else here feel the same? Give me warmth. It's what we're here for, connecting, sharing, loving. We love the winter, it brings us closer together. But don't sleep with young boys for warmth and the chime of innocent laugher. The law frowns upon that sort of thing, I believe. [Edited 3/20/05 11:13am]

i hated the 'come' album when it came out. HATED it. there were maybe two songs i thought were salvageable, and i thought the rest of it was crap.
five years later, i threw it in my stereo on a whim, and after that listen, it's now one of my favorite prince CDs. it just slapped me upside the head outta nowhere. i think sometimes prince's music has some kinda time-release formula that erodes a patented shell of suckiness and allows the essential genius of the stuff to enter one's bloodstream. just a theory.

Ha! Come was actually the album which got me into Prince. A new friend (I was 12, remember back when you actually made 'new' friends?) was a huge fan and he had a tape bootleg of a mysterious unreleased album he kept referring to as 'Gold'. It had Days Of Wild on it and a demo version of Shy, I recall. A few other things too like Interactive. I quite enjoyed this odd, hissy 'Gold' cassette, but when Wee Jimmy played me the Come CD - and I was coming in from the Prince wilderness remember - my ears were licked by beautiful lesbian vampires. The darkness threw me. I knew this 'Prince' ( or Poofy Prince as my mum called him) from Alphabet Street and Kiss and personally thought of him as a kind of sub-Michael Jackson figure who had lost his mind. Funny thing is, due to a fantastic Edinburgh connection of Jimmy's, I had about 100 cassettes of every outtake and live concerts before I heard any of the official releases. There was really no need, I was enjoying the tapes so much. Then, when I finally bought the official releases, boom, I was gone. Still am. And, aye, you're absolutely right. We keep expecting every new Prince release to rewrite the rules of music, and, as is inevitable, we are continually disappointed. But...take the album out of context a few years later and judge it by its own merits...it's like finding money in a pair of old jeans.

Mmm. One reply. Maybe I should have added 'Michael Jackson to the title and spoadic seeding of said two words in aforementioned text.
Infact, I think I will. | |

You're a talented writer, Number 23. Except a cd is not made of "metal" and I thought the bit about your cock was a little unnecessary. Somehow I sense that was the point, though?
I loved the first few paragraphs....a joy to read. Rave however, is still not quite so joyful for me to listen to. Rave In2 I can stand much better. . [Edited 3/17/05 15:05pm]

Well, the sentence was hard fought in my mind, certainly, but I'm a realist so the bad guys won. You know how it is. Maybe I just hoped to wake people up a little seeing as it was near the end of the post, and with the dulled collective psyche of 21st century Western civiliation's tiny attention spans, you have to keep things interesting. And I, maybe foolishly, believed my cock fitted that criteria.

It also took me a while to get into Come, but now it´s one of my favourites. LOVE THAT ALBUM!! "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

Surely you meant, Michael Jackson's neopolitan penis? It's more factually accurate.

Brilliant move to get my intention (where the f--- is he heading to...) They're special pills called "mindsets" and available only through my heamoglobin acsentuators. So, the the clitche' goes, you'll have to kill me to get them. And even then, you must possess and advanced knowledge of genetics and stem cell fusion to benefit from my envious genetic abnormailty.
