Are you kidding me? Gold Experience kicks the living shit out of Musicology.

Musicology-Unambitious, SAFE album with some decent pop tracks designed to remind ppl that Prince could still make an album that doesn't turn off the average listener. Bland, sometimes dated production.

Gold Experience-Passionate, urgent, ambitious project with a musically rich sound and invigorating guitar. Full of great songwriting and classic hooks.
The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

** It's close, but I choose Musicology. Though there are songs I love on TGE like Endorphin Machine and Dolphin, I still have to hit the skip button a bit too much. I can just let Musicology play.

1. musicology VS. now --> Musicology - 2 funky.

2. ICP&C VS. P control--> neither are great.

3. Call my name VS. Beautiful Girl --> Call My Name definitely!

4. Reflection Vs. Gold --> Gold is much better.

5. Dear mr man VS. we march --> Dear Mr. Man because We March is just ok.

6. On the couch vs. SHHH --> Shhhhh is incredible!

7. Cinammon girl VS. Dolphin --> equal.

8. A million days VS. I hate u --> neither!

9. Life of a party VS. Billy jack bitch --> Life O The Party

10. What do u want Vs. 319 --> I hate 319 so it's What Do u Want Me 2 Do 4 sure.

11. The marrying kind VS. Endorphine machine --> Endorphin Machine BY FAR!

12. If i was the man vs. shy --> If I was the Man In Ur Life is better, but Shy is also very cool and underrated.
It's goin' down y'all.
Like the wall o' Berlin!

Using your pairings (which are great, btw), here are my song by song comparisons:

1. musicology VS. now --> Now. The rapping in Now is atrocious. So, I almost chose musicology. While lyrics could be improved in both, at least they are interesting in Now. And that crazed delivery at the end beats the good, though MONOTONOUS groove of Musicology. "It be like that see."

2. ICP&C VS. P control- Illusion, Coma, Pimp, and Circumstance. In both of these, Prince tries to teach women lessons. In ICP&C the delivery is harsh, but in Pussy Control the chorus is so grating I can't stand it. I don't like hearing the word p---y in a song of supposed substance. And do women really need Prince to advise them to control their pussies? As long as he keeps diving in them he shut down the preaching. Why doesn't he sing himself a song about strapping his d--- down?

3. Call my name VS. Beautiful Girl -- The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. This song is sooo precious. When it came out, even haters had to love it.

4. Reflection Vs. Gold - I like Gold a lot. Love it in fact, especially the last verse. But my vote is for REFLECTION. Gold seems a bit contrived in its shadow. It's a mature introspection piece that we haven't heard from Prince before.

5. Dear mr man VS. we march -- We March. Definitely. Dear Mr. Man is so stupid. It's like PRince wanted to discuss some serious topics but didn't know how. The title is an generic as the lyrics. We March, now that's a political song.

6. On the couch vs. SHHH --> I hate SHHH. He's not a student. This is sick. The restrained yearning in On the Couch is superbly conveyed by the music and delivery. I love this song.

7. Cinammon girl VS. Dolphin --> Cinnamon Girl. Well, he tried with this song. It could have been better but it doesn't need to be to defeat Dolphin. Dolphin's overuse of metaphor is too much for me. "You can cut off all my fins but to your ways I will not bend..." ?!no no no! The lyrics are sophomoric. He's done much better.

8. A million days VS. I hate u --> Man, I really like Million Days. But this comparison illustrates how Prince has changed. A Million Days is mediocre in delivery, development, and climax when you compare it to the journey of I Hate you. Hate deals with a more complex idea: that intensity feelings are love and hate can occur simulatenously. And the ending court scene, narrrations and confessionals are a refreshing break from normal song structure. Prince didn't really break from song structure at all on Musicology the album, and he has song a great history of knowing how to finagle a masterpiece with more than chorus, verse, and hook.

9. Life of a party VS. Billy jack bitch --> Oh! Both of these songs are jokes. Must I choose? OK. BJB ... cuz he got CJ good on that one ... especially since he performed it live on an awards show. hahaha! "Goody for you" Prince thumbs up!

10. What do u want Vs. 319 --> I love the subject matter in What Do You Want me to Do Girl. It's a married man under seduction by a girl he's clearly attracted to but committed so he won't cheat ... although he wants to ... but he won't. I love the sincerity of that song. But I've going to be superficial and go for the voyeuristic soap opera that is 319. I whip this out monthly to privately dance to. Love the guitar. Love the daring context. This is a Prince signature song due to its raw sensuality. It's soo much fun. "Betcha got a body by god, c'mon let me see it!" music How can you not love that.

11. The marrying kind VS. Endorphine machine --> I love both of these rockers. But while I want to press one for the money, two for the dream, I'm gonna have to go with THE MARRYING KIND. I love the personality and color in the music and lyrics. He's taunting this guy soo much. "She's gonna miss you at first, but then she's gonna buy me things!!" hahahaha! She's gonna need a pillow... I've got some purple satin lace ones! He's soo bad. It's great.

12. If i was the man vs. shy --> Wow, again I love both of these songs. But Shy is ethereal... it's like he wrote this in dream like he did LRC. "The streets I roam in search of a poem amongst the wild and drinking." Whoa... what muse whispered that line. It's poetry itself. I always want him to write cool stuff like this but he doesn't now as much as he used to. His music now lacks poetry. "Cool dark skin in hot virgin white..."

Well, Misiu, we agree on 6 out of 12!

Song by song:

Musicology

P Control and Illusion/Pimp are both crappy songs

Call My Name

Gold even if it is overproduced pop rock

Dear Mr. Man

Hmmm I like Shhh and On the Couch, but I'll say Shhhh.

Dolphin- even though I can't stand listening to it thanks to a friend of mine who played it too damn much.

Million Days/I Hate U - Like them both but I'll give to I Hate U because of the overblown ending to Million Days

BJB

319 even though it is the 90's version of Kiss

Marrying Kind/Endprphine Machine - I like both

Shy/Man I U're Life- I like both
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'll play it first and tell you what it is later.
Musicology
1. Musicology
Bland, uninspired JB-style dreck.
My Score: 2.5/5
2. Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance
Fun narrative, but the production makes it sound somewhat flat. That's a shame, cause the chorus is a classic pop hook.
My Score: 3.5/5
3. A Million Days
An really easily enjoyable pop song with solid lyrics.
My Score: 4/5
4. Life 'O' The Party
Can you say "outdated chorus"? I mean, really. Candy's vocals in the chorus almost kill this song. Luckily, it has a nice beat and really fun lyrics and vocals from Prince that salvage it.
My Score: 3/5
5. Call My Name
Sexy, sensual song full of romantic lyrics and with a pleasant R&B groove. Nothing brilliant or innovative, but it's still sweet and charming.
My Score: 4/5
6. Cinnamon Girl
Lazy, uninspired chorus, but at least the lyrics are somewhat meaningful.
My Score: 3/5
7. What Do U Want Me 2 Do?
ZZzZZzzzZZz. This song just has no life to it. It's not that it's a midtempo song, but just that it never really seems to have any kind of passion or heart to it. It's just completely "there."
My Score: 2.5/5
8. The Marrying Kind
Really fun song with a nice hook and entertaining lyrics. Still, the production once again sounds dated.
My Score: 3.5/5
9. If Eye Was The Man In Ur Life
Similar to Marrying Kind, and it's another good pop song. It doesn't really wow me though.
My Score: 3.5/5
10. On the Couch
Sweet, melodic song, but it lacks something special. Perhaps it's just that it sounds a little too derivative of Al Greene.
My Score: 3.5/5
11. Dear Mr. Man
Good song, but a little too derivative of Marvin Gaye. A legend like Prince can do better with a song like this, and did with Sign 'O' The Times.
My Score: 3.5/5
12. Reflection
Good, melodic closer, but nothing heart stopping that will really stand out.
My Score: 3.5/5
My Overall Score: 3.5/5
The Gold Experience
1. P Control
Awesome attitude and subtle meaning to the song. Really fun dance track.
My Score: 4/5
2. Endorphinmachine
The passion and urgency in this song is simply amazing. Fantastic energy, and this song overall is just a huge adrenaline rush. Great guitar too.
My Score: 5/5
3. Shhh
What a sexy, sexy song. Everything from the guitar to the lyrics and vocals are incredibly sensuous and sexy. That guitar solo at the end is haunting too. The combination of R&B and killer guitar works perfectly here.
My Score: 5/5
4. We March
Underwhelming song that feels out of place on the album. Still, at least the lyrics actually meant something.
My Score: 3/5
5. The Most Beautiful Girl In The World
What a disappointing version of the song. The single edit is an example of a classic Prince pop song. The album version has unnecessary background effects and sounds too loud and busy for a sweet song like this.
My Score: 3.5/5
6. Dolphin
Yes, the lyrics can be seen as somewhat silly, but you can't deny just how great a hook this song has. It's classic pop.
My Score: 4.5/5
7. Now
Fun dance song that feels comfortable on the album. Good energy.
My Score: 4/5
8. 319
This song's sexy, cool, and just has a great hook.
My Score: 4.5/5
9. Shy
Fascinating lyrics and a great atmosphere of the bright L.A. streets.
My Score: 4/5
10. Billy Jack Bitch
A fun dig at CJ, but it gets slightly repetitive.
My Score: 3.5/5
11. eye Hate U
A nice groove and interesting lyrics, but it doesn't really stand out as much to me as the other (stronger) songs on this album.
My Score: 3.5/5
12. Gold
An adrenaline filled stunner with a blazing guitar solo and tons of heart-stopping energy. A brilliant closer to such a fierce album.
My Score: 5/5
My Overall Score: 4.5/5
Musicology is a nice little album but the Gold Experience, especially if you were living in Minneapolis in the summer and fall of 95. Wow! It's a great album, especially after you've heard him blister through this stuff at Paisley. He was in rare form back then, playing mad! and his band was funky, it was sex and passion and hate..."F" the mainstream and about 150 of us each week got to witness. I miss those "Days of Wild" The Gold Experience for sure. And for those of you who have "experienced" what he's singing about on I hate U, it's right up there with The Beautiful Ones. Musicology doesn't have anything that rips into your heart. My mom likes it, but the Gold Experience....that's raw Prince.
i skip a lot of musicology, the gold experience is exactly what it says it is though - i just let it play and i feel its concept. (i agree 100% about the version of most beautiful as well)
Gold beats the living crap out of Musicology on 90% of the songs.
Even TMBGITW is better than Call My Name, but I've just grown so
tired with the sappiness of it that I chose CMN right now.
