Another Prince/MJ question for all....

Hey Org!

I've often wondered why Michael takes sooooo long to release albums, and why Prince is so much more frequent with his releases.

Is it because Michael is far too perfectionistic and spends way too much time and money on his albums, and is afraid to release something that won't sell 100000 copies? Or does he just write less?(or just doesn't create as quickly?)

Is it because Prince is less concerned with commercial success as well as being more experimental when it comes to releasing albums?

I see the advantage to each approach, given that more people are aware of Michael's albums and songs, (because there are less of them and each release must be bigger than God) Prince's approach seems to be more artistic, though sometimes, I wish that he would give it a bit more time for some of his creative gems to be heard so he gets the credit he deserves for his innovation.

What does everyone think?

i think music is more of a mode of communication and gratification for prince than it is for michael, or at least it exists as such on another level that isn't necessarily a matter of "more", but a matter of greater urgency. plus, prince is able to stroll into the studio whenever he wants and put together tracks all on his lonesome.

Abdul

I think in Michael's case he was burned out, he had been releasing albums every year for how many years up till Thiller. He needed a break I believe, come on he had a new album out every year from age 9?10?11? to age 23, press, tours etc..... it was time for him to chill and the sucess of Thiller allowed him to do that.

I think in Prince's case he eats, sleeps, shits MUSIC, he takes it everywhere with him.

I recall something of Prince writing a new song just about every day. Melodies and arrangements seem to be flowing out of him - he just has to give it a voice.

(I don't know much about MJ and his inspirational muses.)

In Prince's words:
"To me, making a song is like a new girl walking in the room...you never know what's going to happen 'til all the things come together, and there she stands! And she says, "Hi! You want to take a bite of this orange?" And you bite it, and it's cool, and I send it to you. You know?" heart
"All of me eye give 2 thee down at your feet ...
The reassurance in your rhythm speaks 2 me."

I think MJ is a lot more concerned with the public's reaction to an album, whereas Prince just fearlessly makes music cause he loves to. Prince just throws it out there without any inhibitions.

Plus, I think MJ probably has to work a lot harder to create good music, whereas it's just constantly flowing out of Prince.

Prince may appear not care about his music but infact he does a wee bit too much. The whole WB thing, the bootleg thing. Prince, even in interviews seems to be very po faced about his music.

I remember Michael saying that when he goes into a club (hardly ever I imagine) that DJ's would see him and play a Jacko track. Jacko says something like "why would I want to hear my own music all the time" or something like that.

I reckon Prince is/was very self obsessed about his music. Paranoid even. Mike seems not to care much really as he rarely discusses his music.

About why Michael takes so long between albums? I think his contract with Sony has something to do with it. Something like from 1991, 6 albums required in 15 years! What a deal! Annoying for fans like me though!

Could it have anything to do with the fact that Michael is a paedophile?

I've always believed that MJ doesn't care as much about music as he does about fame. P is just the opposite... wink

I think Mj writes as much but his perfectionalism won´t let him release everything.
"When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

These days, most artists take a long time to release new albums.Stevie Wonder is getting ready to release his first album in ten years.Very few artists are as prolific as Prince.

You have the answers in your own questions...

MJ is afraid of commercial failure..

Prince is afraid of not releasing nothing in a year....

It probably takes Michael years to line all those damn guest stars up. He can't seem to make an album by himself.

MJ is an entertainer.

Prince is a musician.

For the entertainer, it's important to get public attention and commercial success. The best way to achieve that is to have long periods between your releases, cause that makes every new release a huge event. Plus, you're able to collect the most catchy material throughout all those years.

For the musician, public attention and commercial success are nice, but not essential. It's essential to make music, to grow and develop artistically and to find ways to satisfy yourself. That's what Prince is a good example of imo.

I've beeen trying to explain this to people for over 20 years! This guy at my job is always dogging Prince. He blaims P for his legal troubles. Then, of course, we got into an argument about MJ vs. P because he was offended by a Chris Rock remark that praised P over MJ. I am so fucking sick of this stupid debate. Well, the guy argued that MJ is a better dancer than Prince. I reminded him that comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges and I wish people would STOP! MJ is an entertainer; Prince is a musician! Stop with the comparisons. It's too old and TIRED>>>!!!! sad

To a comment up there, Michael Jackson actually does write some of his stuff. His better stuff is actually written by him. And yeah, I know Quincy Jones co-wrote most of it but I don't think Michael is an idiot when it comes to music.

I'm sure he's written a lot of stuff but he's afraid to release it because he seems so wrapped up in his image. (i.e. the constant cosmetic surgery). I think that's why the "INVINCIBLE" album didn't do as well (Still sold over 2 million copies but wasn't a MJ norm.)

Though Prince is far better than Michael as a musician.

I wouldn't mind seeing them team up for a couple songs. Imagine Prince and MJ doin' a rendition of "Beat It" with P on the guitar. Sexy, I know.

They were suppose to do the "Bad" single together but Prince didn't think he was needed for it to be a hit. DAMN!

We could've had a "Pop Royalty Tour"
