Prince on Dick Clark

What was so infamous about his appearance on that show in 1980? What did he sing?

he lip-synced "iwbyl" and "wywtmsb?"...right after "iwbyl" he went into the usual interview with dick...thing of it was, prince's switch was on "jive-ass" that day, as he wasn't tryin to say much to dick. most folks have said that p came off as stand-offish towards 'im, but it all seemed like a cross between shyness and head games (he loved fuckin with the press around that time).

if i had the interview on dvd (only have it on video right now) i'd make screencaps of that encounter.

He lip-synched I Wanna Be Your Lover and Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad?.In between that, the "interview" with Dick Clark was almost word less. Basically, Prince held up 4 fingers signifying how long he'd been in music, introduced the band(if I remember right) and lied about his age.Just your typical shyness and "mysterious weirdo" act.Oh yeah, he answered "Thousands" when DC asked how many songs he had.

When Clark asked Prince how many different instruments he played, Nelson answered "A thousand".

While Dick Clark has done a lot for music of all colors and styles it used to be that in order to appear on Bandstand you'd have to give Mr. C a piece of the publishing.

Ever heard of a song called "Sixteen Candles"?

Mr. C owned the publishing on that. While the folks who made it were on the road driving down slick winter highways to promote it Mr. C was buying the Mrs. fur coats with the publishing income.

Now THAT'S pimping 101.

This info is in a "Bandstand" book. I'll post a link to it if I can find it.

In later interviews when P was called on how rude he was to Dick Clark back then he said he was pissed off because Dick Clark kept saying YOU are from Minneapolis? Like he didn't believe anything good could come from there. After time passed though he was very nice to him and recognized Dick Clark's impact on music. He thanked him in a speech once.

As for his "flamer routine" that was back when he was a teen heart throb and we all loved him for his doe eyes and shyness.

wink

I guess he can turn the "jive ass" switch off sometimes lol

You guys are way off. This is why eveyone "hears" about this show being so "infamous."

The interview started out well enough, and Prince was quite happy... smiling, introduced the band, very courteous, very respectful to Dick Clark. He wasn't trippin' or playing mind games, or fucking with the media in any way shape or form.

The interview turned sour when Dick Clark asked him about his age. Even though Prince lied and said "19," Dick made the comment that he still had another year to go, before he graduated... that's when Prince takes offense and his attitude kicked in.

You look at his face when Dick says that... the smile disappears. He is asked how many years ago he made his demos... Prince holds up 4 fingers.

The rest of the interview, you can tell Prince just didn't want to talk anymore... after that comment.

You obviously haven't seen this interview.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be the first to admit to Prince being a dick... but in this incident, it's actually the other way around.

Dick made the comment about "this is not the type of music that comes from Minneapolis," and saying "moments we'll be with you," when Prince paused to answer a question.

Au contraire my friend... Dick was being a dick to Prince in this interview.
