What was your first impression of Prince? What was your very first impression of Prince? I was really young when I found out who he was and I can fuzzily remember I knew he was black, short, lived in Minneapolis, was werid, and he really liked girls. That was honestly my first impression of him. My dad thought he was disgusting he would always say "Are you listing to that sleezy black man again! Man that guys is a werido" My dad had a crush on Kim Bassinger and was appalled when he would read gossip stories about those two in the paper. My dad was not down to the lyrics of Gett Off either when it would come on the radio in the car he would switch the channel and I would throw a fit and my mom would switch it back. My mom was cool-she LOVED Prince. In fact we would both have converstations about how sexy he was. Anyway I degress, what was your first impression of Prince?

My first impression was that Prince and his musical genius were a fusion of greatness and talent. In that first moment i felt a presence of creative love and intense energy that poured out like a gushing stream of spring water.

I saw the 1999 video and I actually thought Prince was the name of the group! I was only 12 at the time, and I figured since Queen was a group, these guys were like their competition or something. The video caught my attention, and eventually I found that it's just one guy with a backing band. Then one day I heard "Let's Pretend We're Married". The rest is purple history. Don't hate me 'cause I'm NOT beautiful

I have to admit that the first time I saw Prince, I wanted nothing to do with him. My sister was into him in the early early 80s and she played his stuff, but I didn't like it. I was only 11 and 12 at the time, and my sister and our cousin would play the Controversy album over and over and over again. I didn't get it at all. "'Annie Christian, Annie Christ, until you're crucified...' What the fuck was that? And look at the guy; what a fucking freak."
Two years later it was all over. I was hooked for life. So I guess what they say about first impressions isn't always true.

That's a good expression "he really liked girls". Hah, that's really apt. I think he appearead even a bit scary the way he really liked the girls. It was like "You do all that stuff to impress women? Why isn't Michael Jackson good enough for them?!?"

The first time I saw him was on a poster in a friend's sister's bedroom. It was the 1999 poster with him in the purple trenchcoat. I thought " Ew, he's weird looking and why does she have this big poster on the wall? I was about 12 years old. Fast forward two years later: 1984 and Purple Rain. I"M IN LOOOOVE WITH THIS MAN, I WANT TO MARRY HIS FINE ASS! I still feel that way.

I used to see the cover of the "Let's Pretend We're Married" single all the time in stores and thought that Prince was one strange-looking dude. Then I saw the "1999" video and thought the song was different, but cool, but there was a really sleazy vibe to the whole thing--the shot on video look, JJ and Lisa standing a little too close together, etc. Liking it made me feel dirty (12 years of Catholic School will do that to you). Then the 'Purple Rain' commercials starting airing all over TV and I was instantly a fan.

I thought he was a gay ass MF as well. But then I bought a purple IZOD jacket in high school and thought that everyone thought I was Prince. Very bold for a straight man to wear purple in those days. 1985-86 or so.

my first impression was the song 1999. i was about 3 or 4 and the little girl on the end of the song saying "mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?" scared me because i thought the world was going to end. then when i was older, i thought he was weird because he wore really nice clothes and make-up and he scared me. plus everyone in my (small, southern) town kept telling me he was gay. basically, until i started thinking for myself, the man scared me. it couldn't keep me away from his music though. Contrary to many others' first opinions, I never ever got the impression that Prince was gay. I don't know why. Seeing all the smokey photography of him from the '1999' album just made me think he was some kind of super freak like Rick James, but not gay.

I was just a kid when he changed his name to a symbol, so I thought he was this little pervert who lost his mind.
My first really visible memory of Prince, since I was too young to know it was even Prince I was hearing in Batman when I was watching it for the first time at age 5, was basically my mom getting mad at my dad for taping his new video Cream. My mom got annoyed and said "I hate that dirty little man." [Edited 3/15/05 11:18am] The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I remember hearing his voice before seeing him and that had a huge impact itself. Later when i eventually did see him i thought he was cool as fuck. I always remember trying (in vain) to get my primary school chums into his music but they weren't having it.

My first taste was probably Disk 1 of the Hits/the B-Sides, and I loved it. I didn't realize how sexual and deep(and sometimes dark) his music was until a road trip to Tahoe. My friend brought Girl 6, Emancipation, Crystal ball, and TGE. my perception was completely changed.
They used to play Gett Off on the radio? Get outta here... Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

The first Prince song that I can remember that I heard was "Why U Wanna Treat Me So Bad". I was only about 6 or 7 and loved that song. I would ask my dad "Who's That Dad?" while my dad would learn the lead guitar part to that song. Paul G II

I didn't think the show lasted till 1979. Anyway, I wish they had played that episode when they had a marathon a few years ago on VH1. Andy is a four letter word.
