Everything you ever wanted to know about (#1): FOR YOU

I figured it might be fun to start threads devoted to compiling all the known information about a particular track, so people can find anything they would like to know all in one place.

So the place to start is with the first released track, For You. I'll start, and you add more.

For You is the title track and the first track on the first Prince Album.

It was released on the album For You on April 7, 1978.

There are four unreleased versions of the song; all home recordings from 1976.

The track is 1:06, and features only vocals. The credits are "All Vocals: Prince".

It is, fittingly, produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince.

Alright, you get the idea. Write about the track, the lyrics, the unreleased versions, the evolution of the song... This kind of thread will be much more interesting and involved for some tracks than for others, but they should all be good reference points, for newbies and old purple hippies.

there's a few early variations of "for you" and "just as long as we're together" in circulation...the variations of "just as..." is interesting cuz you get to hear the song evolve.

La La La He He Hee (Highly Explosive)

This nearly 11-minute track was released on vinyl as a b-side to Sign O The Times. It was recorded on a dare that Prince couldn't compose an entire song based on the song's title.

Right...I thought the idea of the thread was "Everything you wanted to know about..." and #1 on the thread happended to be the song "For You," and the rest of us dopes could just chime in with other tracks. I didn't realize we were focusing on the For You album only at this point... :hide:

So, I hereby ammend my previous post to read:

La La La He He Hee

This nearly 11-minute track was released on vinyl as a b-side to Sign O The Times. It was recorded on a dare that Prince couldn't compose an entire song based on the song's title.

Recorded eight years after the release of For You, "La La La He He Hee" clocks in at more than 4 minutes longer than the longest track on For You, which was "Just As Long As We're Together" (6:24)

There is not a single track on For You that starts with the letter "L" like "La La La He He Hee" does. However, two tracks on For You end in the letter "e" like "La La La He He Hee," namely "So Blue" and "In Love."

"La La La He He Hee" has six words in its title. Track 6 on For You is "Baby." Prince repeatedly yells the word "Baby" throughout "La La La He He Hee," specifically following those shouts with phrases like "funky dog."

Abdul

Soft and Wet is my pick:

I like the version of that song that ended up on the album as opposed to the demo cut of that song that some of us here have heard. It lacked that punch that the album version had, it's still a good listen though.
