ok folks lets get this one thing straight once and for all. prince had NO choice of what was released as a single that was the choice of the heads at Warners.

Not true at all. Warner's tried to convince him to not release "When Doves Cry" as a single, since it was so uncommercial (no bass line really freaked them out). He stood his ground and it was released anyway, and thus became a big hit. They also weren't too thrilled with "Let's Go Crazy", due to the sermon at the beginning and the guitar solo at the end, but once again Prince refused to budge. This happened years later with "Kiss" as well. Plenty of times WB didn't like P's choice for a single, and he proved them wrong.

I wonder what WB rather have had as the first single?

I understand and respect all of your opinions on Let's Go Crazy. But if you're going to praise such a poppy commercial song, then don't bash Diamonds and Pearls or any other album for being too commercial and playing to the charts.

That's just the point, it wasn't a commercial song at the time. LGC spawned a host of imitators. Nowadays, it may sound like a zillion other songs, but it was quite innovative in 1984.

mmmmm....not quite. imho, as strong of a role the song played within purple rain, on its own it more than likely woulda fallen flat.

I agree, it wouldn't have made it on its own and PR actually brought the song out the way it was intended.

Why not? An album can be commercial and great, or commercial and shit. An what has Diamonds and Pearls got to do with the subject of this thread/

Purple Rain created trends, D&P followed them.

Not the whole album. Songs like "Money Don't Matter 2 Night", "Strollin", "Willing & Able" and "Cream" (yeah, said it) sounded unlike anything else on the radio at that time. They didn't start any trends, but they are still another example (to me) of Prince doing his own thing.

I agree with you, except with regard to "Cream". That's just a re-tread of T. Rex's "Bang A Gong (Get It On)".

A certain little song called The Beautiful Ones.

Every non-Prince fan I've ever known has always been moved and blown away by this song. Hell, this song alone is cherished by other artists and Prince fans alike.

I think it would've easily been a #1 hit for him, especially if the video was just the club scene with Prince performing it to Apples.

Instead, he releases Take Me With U?! So, so stupid.

Yes! So, so stupid! Just think if you'd been around to tell him, Purple Rain, the album might have sold well, he may have had a couple of number ones, and he might even have become really famous, if not a superstar!

OH NO U DIDN'T!

My vote for BEST POST OF THE DAY!

What he fails to understand is that you can never have too much success with an album.

I'm not saying he ruined the Purple Rain project, I'm just saying I believe TBO wou'dve been another massive hit.

It's not like Purple Rain sold more albums than any project in music history. Another big hit wouldn't have hurt at all, so it's worth thinking about.

Personally, I've always found "Cream" quite dull for a Prince song. I've always thought "Peach" was a more energetic re-working of "Cream" and is far superior.

You're right, best Prince song ever! But if he did release it back then as a single it would have been a less special song I guess.

Let's Go Crazy was a mistake to release as a single IMO, and easily the weakest song on the album. Take Me With U kicks ass.
I heard Mariah Carey and Dru Hill's rendition on Mariah Carey's Butterfly CD and nearly laughed. So yes, other artists reall respect this song.

Uhh, Let's Go Crazy is a #1 hit.

Aw come on, I had my first teenage car accident while Let's Go Crazy was blasting on the radio. My car slid off a rainy road and headed towards a modest cliff over a river. At the last minute, my car was stopped (on the edge!) by a wooden sign post. Strangely enough, in the middle of it all, I saw the humor that this might've been the last song I'd ever hear . . .much less melodramatic than if Purple Rain had been playing . .or good lord, The Beautiful Ones. Better to go out with a celebratory beat. OH NO! LET'S GO!

Seriously, which one of these songs could not have been a hit in the charts?

1 - Let's go crazy
2 - Take me with U
3 - The Beautiful Ones
4 - Computer Blue
5 - Darlin Nikki
6 - When Doves Cry
7 - I would die 4 you
8 - Baby I'm a star
9 - Purple Rain

Let's go crazy, The Beautiful Ones, Computer Blue, When doves cry and Purple Rain to me are all-time favourites of mine! I love this album! Imho, Take me with u is the weakest song and indeed should not have been released a single - I mean, Apples simply cannot sing! What were they thinking?

Totally in agreement. As much as I love the song "I Would Die 4 U", I also felt that "Baby I'm A Star" would have been a far stronger single. I can't believe that "Baby I'm A Star" was dismissed to the B-side of "Take Me With U."

Not releasing Housequake as the 2nd single(or at all) from Sign O the Times was a bigger mistake to me.
