1999 the New Master!! Wtf!!! Could this be the worst song (remake) that P has ever done? What’s up with the making of this song? P was all hyped up about owning the new version and it would be better than the original. I couldn’t wait until it came out. I just knew it would be the ultimate since the original was all of that, but when I played the TNM I was totally shocked “wtf is this all about”. What’s your take on this remake?

I've actually never heard it. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

lucky you. Really though, what's so bad about it? And I don't just wanna hear "it sucks cock", I want real reasons why it's bad. Anyone? The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Anyone? well, he had the chance of reworking such a classic song into somethin grandiose, but it just turned out as total poopage. it's over-produced and just right-out scary, right down to the album cover artwork. this is definitely one of those "you'd have to hear it to understand"-songs. once you've heard it, you'll see.

Trust me PurpleKnight this is the worst song P has done imo. I can't even explain it. I really tried 2 give this song a spin but its way 2 scary like Handclapsfingasnapz said all the way down 2 the artwork...

Because he actually had the Revolution and the NPG in the studio for the remaster. You can hear Wendy and Lisa singin their lines. Look on the back cover of the CD and it lists The NPG, the Revolution, Larry Graham, Rosie Gaines, & Doug E. Fresh in on the song.

Look on the back cover of the CD and it lists The NPG, the Revolution, Larry Graham, Rosie Gaines, & Doug E. Fresh in on the song. No he didn't. Its credited to Prince & The Revolution because, technically speaking, 1999 was the first album credited to P&TR (believe it or not. Inside the Prince logo on the album cover, in small letters, it says "and the Revolution"). Prince actually used the backing vox and much of the instrumentation from the original recording (re-recording his own voice, and adding new instrumentation on top). Larry, Doug-E and Rosie were all in the studio, but the Revolution members were not. In a nutshell, its just a fancy remix. The backing vox on that track is Jill Jones, Dez Dickerson and Lisa Coleman. Wendy wasn't even a member of the Revolution at the time of the original recording. Originally, Prince intended to use this as a springboard for the "Revolution" album Roadhouse Garden. When Wendy & Lisa declined, he scrapped the project. I hear a lot of venom regarding this track on the org, so my question 2 all of U is this:
What would have made this remake of '1999' acceptable? I'm curious. Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

If it would suck my cock I might like it better. Its basically just a lame NPS-era remix of an old song. Its not all that bad, just nothing spectacular. It certainly doesn't improve on the original at all. Like much of New Power Soul it lacks anything really special. Why he didn't jsut do a cool live version is beyond me. Oh, and the album cover? I remember at the time it came out, Prince was suing Uptown and other fansites, putting out crappy music, and talking on his website about joining the "Collective". Then, he appeared on this cover with all this cybernetic shit on his face and it all became clear! Prince had been assimilated by the Borg, and was planning on assimilating us!!! I AM OF BORG! RESISTANCE IS FUTILE! Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones. (Ecclesiastes 7:9)

You summed it up perfectly. That CD makes a hell of a coaster and frisbee on occassion. Seriously though, that Maxi-Single is just god-awful. It's so bad it goes past bad, back to good, then back to bad again.

Thank you!!! No, she doesn't sing on it. She recites this strange bit about Christmas, which relflects the JW beliefs that Prince was starting to study (although, its not wholly in-line with the JW faith. Some of the things stated in the mix are just weird Prince-isms that aren't historically accurate) Do not hurry yourself in your spirit to become offended, for the taking of offense is what rests in the bosom of the stupid ones.
