I think Prince puts on his feminine side for two reasons that I can think of right now as I type this response:

1. When he first started in the music industry, he wanted to shock people so he acted feminine in order to generate controversy - or in essence, he wanted to shock people.

2. I think he's come on to the idea that acting feminine gets him more pussy and that's probaly the same reason or part of the same reason he makes music - to get pussy (sorry it's his approach to courting women).

I'm not sure I agree with you.

Prince has said that he didn't get into music for the women, but then again everything he says sort of needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

As for the shock value factor: Sure, he may have played it up a bit more back then, but considering he's done the androgynous thing years after it stopped being cool and shocking, I get the impression he's just naturally femme.

I love that his look constantly changes and hes not afraid to be androgenous

However, I don't see the changes in attitude really.
Even at his most extreme he seems like hes being "girly-macho"
if you can imagine that.
He stays pretty consistant with it.

I think he's trying to look more masculine cuz he started to dislike homosexuals after becoming a JW.

Yep, I think you're right about that. It was Larry and the JW's that put that bullshit into his head (among other things). I feel that he has come to the conclusion that Larry and his JW pals are wrong about gays. I also think it's a sign of maturity that he no longer gets "femmed up".

I've noticed Prince being more masculine and more feminine back and forth throughout the years. I don't think he does it on purpose, I just think that's who he is and can't help it. He's never been afraid to flaunt both sides. I just hope he doesn't try to stifle his feminine side because of the Jehovah's Witness thing now.
I agree. His feminine side is irrisistible to me, my mom, and all of my aunts. It's like a thing the women in my family go through except my sisters got skipped.

I hope so. Because if I were to meet him and he tried to pull the whole "homosexuality is wrong; it's a sin" act -I don't care who he thinks he is, I'd slap him. And he'd deserve it.

nod

I'm afraid his current religious beliefs are hindering his sexuality, which he obviously was enough comfortable with for a very, very long period in his life. Of course, his also a rather old chap and understands that he needs to tone down a bit. But instead of those suits at least bring back the Emancipation sweaters. Girls wear sweaters too, that's still androgyny fit for an older gentleman right?

The Crusades, the Black Death, both World Wars, and David Hasselhoff's career: all Larry's fault.

biggrin

Oh yeah, and making Prince nuttier than he already was -that's all his fault too.

Actually, he was particularly feminine in '86.
I did not like his Parade look ,he was sexy in the Kiss video ,but his short hair and too much eye liner etc was too much sometimes (although i liked those tight ass trousers he wore )also his look in the 90's that weird big hair he had and he was so skinny ,d i thought that was very feminine and weird neutral but i love his Purple Rain look i suppose that half feminine half masculine ,but he is the only guy i think who can get away with make-up and heels etc . kitty

I beg 2 differ.
Prince is fish x 100000 to the millionth power multipled by infinity, 24 x 7.
He goes through phases of being feminine and then being scorchingly, flamingly girly.

He's sooooo FISH, that if you slapped a pair of jeans, a cowboy hat, and some shit kickin' boots on him, he'd look like a manwhore on the Vegas Strip, and still smell like tuna.

AND WE LOVE HIM FOR IT.

I think he does the more masculine look when he's just being himself, though I don't doubt that at times, there's an agenda behind it (all of these suits are so ... "respectable").

I think he goes all girly on us when he's wrestling with something that involves the core of who he is, when he's re-evaluating his identity and trying to feel out all sides of himself to get to what's true again -- or to find what's true. Kind of like experimentation and hiding all at the same time.

Well to me the answer is simple, I just think P is changing with the times and with age. I perfer his clothing tight and colorful and eccentric, but didn't he already do that? Yes!! An artist must reinvent himself over and over. On another note, I really wish P would dye his hair light brown again like in 1997.

last time i saw him was in rotterdam ONA sound check. he was just acting very normal, not posing, and i got this surprising vibe of him...he was a man like my dad...and old man. very serious and just normal.

i honestly think he just acts femenine when hes at certain places. the same way he plays with his voice tone.

Well, his recent masculine phase is probably to keep Musicology on top. With the current climate of hate and fear of gender-bending and homophobia these days, it could kill his recent comeback. And although in the 90's he sometimes looked more feminine, he's never matched the femininity he expressed on his second CD(correct me if I'm wrong).

Prince has never done and most likely never will do anything to keep albums on top. He's just never been the type to care he's too busy making the next album to worry about one staying on top. Prince's moves have never depended on album sales.
