maculinity, femininity, and Prince

This is probably a dumb topic, but let's all play along regardless, shall we? smile

note: I just got off work and I'm sleep-deprived, so it's probably not going to be worded as well as I'd like it to be. I'm trying to create a serious thread, so if any of this looks stupid or doesn't make sense, could someone *please* tell me so I can fix it when I've had more sleep?

Also, let's see if one of my threads can last longer than 12 hours without being locked this time? Certain Orgers who I won't name b/c I'm in too good of a mood were making asses of themselves on a previous thread of mine.

Well here we go...

Obviously, Prince is not the most masculine guy in the world. It's no secret that when someone says "macho" you don't picture the wee purple man.

Now, maybe it's just me, but it seems to me that his girlyness comes stronger and weaker in phases. Like, for weeks, even months, on end he'll be "macho Prince" -wearing suits and minimal makeup. Not only that, he'll have fairly masculine body language and way of carrying himself. Then he'll turn around, and for weeks or months at a time he'll be more feminine. The makeup starts getting thicker, and the clothes girlier. His body language and way of carrying himself also becomes very typically female at these times.

Has anyone else noticed this, or am I seeing shit? If it's not just me -why do you think he does this? Is it on purpose or something he does unconciously? How do you think it would this affect his songwriting, if at all?

Input please. smile

Ahh....he's a gemini. He has two sides to manage.

That's all I can think of right now.

Even without makeup, Prince is still a pretty MF! lol

Seriously, it was never his fault that he is as pretty as his mother.

Well, his recent masculine phase is probably to keep Musicology on top. With the current climate of hate and fear of gender-bending and homophobia these days, it could kill his recent comeback. And although in the 90's he sometimes looked more feminine, he's never matched the femininity he expressed on his second CD(correct me if I'm wrong).

He was particulary masculine in 86...

I've noticed Prince being more masculine and more feminine back and forth throughout the years. I don't think he does it on purpose, I just think that's who he is and can't help it. He's never been afraid to flaunt both sides. I just hope he doesn't try to stifle his feminine side because of the Jehovah's Witness thing now.

Besides incredible talent, part of Prince's appeal is that he seemed to relate to EVERYBODY. His image was seemingly part male, part female, part black, part white, part sinner, part saint, part rock, soul,R&B and funk. Not too many others seemed to be as relatable on such a global scale. Most acts seemed to have a smaller target audience.

Years later, after he's proven to the world what he capable of doing, he seems more comfortable with being a black male now that most listeners are more open to his music and that black males are much more mainstream marketable now that in the 80's.In the early days he made a conscientious effort to avoid being labeled as "just some black guy...in panties." with his androdgenous image.I seriously doubt he'll ever fully stop blurring societies lines with his music or completely with his look because image aside, all of that is/was part of who he is. Personally, I don't care how he looks as long as keeps on makin' jams!

You guys know more about this stuff than I do, but I just from the photos I've seen and the way he was more masculine for 1999 and Purple Rain. Who knows about 85 because there are no photos, and then everything I've seen of him from the Cherry Moon-Parade period looks kinda androgynous. A perfect balance between fem and mas. In fact, I think 86 was his ugliest period. Other than that he always looks awesome.

First of all don't put yourself down for creating a "dumb" topic. This is the org we can be silly if we want to, we are not trying to slove all the worlds problems here. Just post whatever you want the internet should be a form of escape and fun! Unfortuantly alot of people don't understand that and like to shit all over others but they are just misrable people so you just have to learn how to inore them. hug

But yeah back to your question that is one of my favortie things about Prince. It is probably intentional but he has always been effeminate so I am sure he can't help it. I love when Prince would be all sexy and hard like in the Sexy M.F. video and then turn around and with eyeliner, big hoop earings and start talking really softly. I wish more men were like Prince actually, Not that they have to jump around in heels and wear makeup but Prince just has a way of realating to women and makes them feel good that pisses men off and in turn he gets called a fag and whatever. But if more men were more in touch with their emotions insted of always having a macho act women would be alot happier. Prince has got it going on! nod

Me too. I've seen before when alternative people get religion and then go out of their way to appear normal; to conform to their particular religions' preferred "look". I should hope that he just happens to be more masculine lately, or that he's been doing it to promote Musicology, rather than if he'd gotten the idea into his head that God wouldn't like it if he dressed girly.

So true! From what I've seen in interviews and whatnot -he's got a real knack for being mean in a bitchy, subtle way that only a true lady can pull off.

I wrote that becase last time I had a big thread like this about Prince, I ended up getting attacked for something I hadn't said in the first place. It's just easier to post a disclaimer of sorts now on any thread in the Prince forum that has the potential to get messy.

I think Prince puts on his feminine side for two reasons that I can think of right now as I type this response:

1. When he first started in the music industry, he wanted to shock people so he acted feminine in order to generate controversy - or in essence, he wanted to shock people.

2. I think he's come on to the idea that acting feminine gets him more pussy and that's probaly the same reason or part of the same reason he makes music - to get pussy (sorry it's his approach to courting women).

I agree with the first thing you said..people in the eighites were really shocked by him at the time...but the second?..I guess sure he is a man and all but....hey in the Rave interview he said he didn't get into music to meet girls...are you implying Prince is lying?... no no no! evillol
